MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University head coach Peter Stewart has harped on rebounding for much of the season.
When the Beavers win the rebounding battle, they have usually gone on to win the game. When they don't, it hasn't been pretty some nights.
MSU outrebounded Briercrest College (Saskatchewan) 20-10 on the offensive end alone and held a 48-30 advantage overall to help the Beavers to a 101-69 nonconference NAIA men's basketball win Tuesday at the MSU Dome.
“We got to the glass better,” Stewart said. “Obviously winning breeds winning. Our effort was deserving, but we have to get better. At times things were good, but at times they weren't.”
The most potent offensive rebounder was Beavers guard
Jonas Pollard. Pollard grabbed nine offensive boards – 14 rebounds overall – and scored a team-high 25 points in one of his best games in an Minot State jersey.
“Any time you get nine offensive rebounds, that's pretty good,” said Stewart. “We probably have played (Pollard) out of position at times because of rotation problems, but he got to play more at the three tonight. He gets to the basket. He is athletic and strong and goes and gets the ball.”
While Pollard was cleaning up on the offensive end, junior forward
Kelvin Fraser was swatting shots on the defensive end. Fraser, ranked No. 4 in NAIA Division II in blocks per game, added to his season total with six against the Clippers. He also finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
“Blocking six shots is a game changer,” Stewart said.
MSU (6-10 overall) led 51-31 at halftime, mainly due to 7 of 15 3-point shooting – five of which came from
Nathaniel Packineau. Packineau finished with 20 points on six 3-pointers and added four rebounds and four assists.
“Pack shot the ball well,” said Stewart. “We did a good job in the first half of passing the ball well and he got some good looks and knocked them down. In the second half, we didn't pass it as well and he forced some shots, but six (3s) is a pretty good night.”
The Clippers battled MSU much of the second half behind solid play from Gradyn Childerhose and Matt Myers. Childerhose and Myers combined for 46 of BC's 69 points with Childerhose leading all scorers with 27. Myers scored 19 points and pulled down six rebounds. Leading the Clippers on the glass with James Wohlgeshaffen with 11.
MSU had five players hit for double figures as
Jason West scored 18 points and
Anthony Enriquez added 10. West was solid all over the court – as he has been for much of the past month – as he added six steals and four assists to his points.
“He has been pretty good for us for a stretch,” Stewart said of West. “His leadership on the court was outstanding.”
The Beavers return to Dakota Athletic Conference play Friday and Saturday as they play host to Dakota State and Mayville State in the home conference opener. Friday is set for 7:30 p.m. and Saturday is slated for 6 p.m. MSU's women's team open things up each night with a 5:30 p.m. tip off Friday with the Trojans and a 4 p.m. game time with Mayville Saturday.
