Beavers earn big road win

MSU pulls away from University of Mary in second half

Box Score BISMARCK, N.D. – Minot State University snapped a 10-game losing streak to rival University of Mary behind sharp-shooting by Morgan Klose (Fr., G, Fairview, N.D.).

Klose scored a career-high 19 points to propel the Beavers to a 76-65 win over the Marauders Tuesday in NCAA Division II women's basketball at McDowell Activity Center.

The Beavers (2-1 overall) were forced into a small lineup due to foul trouble and proved it could win with the lineup.

“We decided to go with the guards,” said MSU head coach Sheila Green Gerding said. “We were a little lethargic in the second half and that lineup really started to play. We scrapped the offense to a certain extent and just let them play. We needed the guards to attack and to score.”

MSU led by three midway through the second half but both starting post players Christina Boag (So., Tamworth, Australia) and Carly Boag (So., Tamworth, Australia) picked up their fourth foul. With a smaller lineup, MSU relinquished the lead for one play and then roared back to take a 12 point lead.

Klose hit all three of her 3-pointers during crucial times in the second half. She knocked down back-to-back 3s to give MSU a 53-41 lead with just over nine minutes to play in the second. Her third was the clincher putting the Beavers on top 69-56 with 1:07 to play.

“We got on Morgan a little about not scoring. She's a scorer,” Green Gerding said. “Maybe she needs to know that she has the green light and look to create some herself.”

MSU's post combination of the Boags dominated when the two weren't on the bench due to foul trouble. Christina Boag scored 13 points, pulled down five rebounds and had one block. Carly Boag added 11 points, eight rebounds, three blocks, two assists and two steals. Both had nine points at halftime where MSU carried a 31-29 lead.

The Marauders (0-1) shot lights out from beyond the arc in the first half, knocking down 6-of-11 3-pointers to keep pace with MSU's inside game. Mary only had nine first-half baskets, but six were 3s. The Marauders struggled a bit in the second, however, as they shot just 2 for 15 in the second and 8 for 26 overall.

While Klose had the big numbers, MSU also got solid contributions from guards Lauren Safranski (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.), who scored 12 points and pulled down six rebounds; Sacarra Molina (Jr., Hinsdale, Mont.), who had nine points, two assists and two rebounds; April Nakatani (Sr., Sacramento, Calif.), who had eight points, five assists and five rebounds; and Michaela Larson (So., Hutchinson, Minn.), who scored two points and added a rebounds and a steal.

U-Mary was led in scoring by Ali Collins who finished with 16 points, five steals, four assists and four rebounds. Shaunna Knife added 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The win not only snapped MSU's 10-game overall losing streak against Mary, it also snapped a long streak of losses at Bismarck as MSU hadn't won in the Capitol City since a playoff win in 2001.

The Beavers have a busy week as they play host to Southwest Minnesota State Thursday at the MSU Dome (6 p.m.) and play at Augustana College Saturday (3 p.m.). MSU and U-Mary meet one more time next Wednesday at the Dome at 6 p.m. All four games are against future Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foes as the Beavers join the NSIC in 2012-13.
