MINOT, N.D. – What a difference a week can make.
Less than a week from handling the University of Mary on the Marauders home court, Minot State University women's basketball suffered one of its worst home defeats in recent memory.
The Beavers shot just 25.9 percent from the floor and the Marauders hit 14 of 20 3-pointers as U-Mary ran away with an 81-52 win in NCAA Division II women's basketball Wednesday at the MSU Dome.
The Marauders (3-1 overall) jumped all over Minot State from about the halfway point on the first half and never let up. Senior Kayla Schmidt scored 18 of her game-high 21 points in the first half, all coming on 3-pointers. Mary led 48-29 at the half.
Minot State (2-4) took an early lead, but it was evaporated by the long-range shooting by the Marauders. While MSU's shooting percentage fell as the first half progressed, U-Mary's was steady. The Marauders hit 16 first-half field goals including nine 3s.
MSU never really recovered from the run, going without a basket over the first six minutes of the second half as the lead bulged to 30 and remained for the rest of the game.
Along with Schmidt, McKenzie Foster scored in double figures, netting 15 for the Marauders. She hit 3 of 5 3s in the game and 7 of 8 free throws. Linda Murray paced the team with 10 rebounds and three blocks to go along with four points. All 12 U-Mary players who got into the game scored.
The Beavers, who have lost three straight since defeating Mary last week, had two players in double figures as
Christina Boag (So., F, Tamworth, Australia) and
Morgan Klose (Fr., G, Fairview, N.D.) both hit 10.
Carly Boag (So., F, Tamworth, Australia) scored seven points and finished with a team-high nine rebounds.
Lauren Safranski (Jr., G, Burnsville, Minn.) added eight points.
Minot State will have little time to dwell on the loss as they travel to Billings, Mont., to take on MSU-Billings and MSU-Northern at the Yellowjackets Holiday Classic Friday and Saturday.
