HAVRE, Mont. – Minot State University women's basketball couldn't overcome a second barrage of 3-pointers by Montana State-Northern.
The Skylights hit 12 3s in the game and held Minot State to just 35.4 percent shooting to down the Beavers 69-61 in the final game of the Duck Inn MSU-Northern Tournament Saturday at the Armory Gymnasium.
The Beavers and Skylights split a pair of games this season, but MSU-N designated the first matchup in Billings, Mont., an exhibition. In both games, Northern used the 3-pointer as its main weapon.
On Saturday, Laramie Schwenke and Nikki Tresch did most of the damage from beyond the arc. The duo combined for eight triples as Schwenke went 5 for 7 on 3s and Tresch 3 for 11. Tresch led all scorers with 20 points.
The Beavers (7-7 overall) tried to counter with inside play as
Christina Boag (So. F, Tamworth, Australia),
Katie Hardy (So., F, Fairview, N.D.) and
Carly Boag (So. F, Tamworth, Australia) combined for 27 points in the game, but the Beavers finished with just 22 of 62 shooting overall. MSU took 17 more shots than the Skylights, but made just one more basket.
Neither team had much of a lead until Northern pulled away late. MSU took a 16-10 lead on a basket by Hardy from
Carly Boag with 13:30 to play in the first half. MSU had a 39-34 lead with just under 15 minutes to play in the second half after open the second with a 9-0 run.
But each time Northern (12-1) answered and it usually was a 3-pointers.
Along with Tresch, Schwenke finished in double figures with 17 points and added five rebounds and five assists. Jordan Bruuresma added 14 points and seven rebounds for Northern.
Christina Boag led the Beavers with 15 points and finished with four rebounds. Hardy had 14 points and five rebounds, while
Carly Boag and
Sacarra Molina (Jr., G, Hinsdale, Mont.) added eight each.
Carly Boag paced the Beavers with 10 rebounds.
MSU returns home for one final game before the holiday break as they play host to Jamestown College Monday at 6 p.m. at the MSU Dome.
