ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Minot State University made several second-half runs, but couldn't earn a comeback win as University of Alaska Fairbanks held off MSU 83-77 in NCAA Division II men's basketball during play the AT&T Jamboree Friday at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
The Beavers (1-8 overall) trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half, but closed the margin to a two possession game on multiple occasions. The final time on a
Thomas Korf (R-Fr., F, St. Cloud, Minn.) 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining.
But UAF responded each and every time. The Nanooks (2-7) hit timely free throws down the stretch and had an answer to every Beavers' run. Fairbanks was 21-30 from the free throw line in the game, including solid 17 for 23 shooting in the second half.
MSU trailed just 37-33 at halftime and played a solid first half. But the Nanooks jumped out to a 53-41 lead over the first eight of the second half, going on a16-8 run capped by layup by Daniel Shaw.
The Beavers battled back behind to cut the lead to just six with a free throw by
Adam Randall (R-Fr., G, Steele, N.D.). MSU couldn't get closer than six the remainder of the contest.
Fairbanks placed five players in double figures, led by Nico Matthews' 19 points. Matthews also had a team-high six rebounds. Sergej Pucar and Dominique Brinson scored 14 points each and Stefan Tica and Jesse Ward added 11 apiece in the win.
Yonas Behre (Jr., G, Toronto, Ontario) scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Beavers. Behre also dished out six assists and pulled down four rebounds. Randall had a solid game with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while
Jonas Pollard (Sr., G, Mesa, Ariz.) scored 10 points.
Chris East (So., G, Toronto, Ontario) was just a basket away from a double-double as he pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with eight points for the Beavers.
Minot State finishes a three-game set in Alaska with a 7 p.m. (AKST) matchup with Alaska Anchorage to finish the AT&T Jamboree.
