Beavers break out

Minot State scores 65 first-half points in rout

Box Score WINNIPEG, Manitoba  – Minot State University ended its losing streak in break-out fashion.

The Beavers raced to 65 first-half points and cruised to a105-75 win over Keyano College (Alberta) in the seventh place game at the 2011 Coca Cola Wesmen Classic Friday at the Duckworth Centre.

“I think it started in the first half where we had 19 assists and just four turnovers,” said MSU head coach Peter Stewart. “Getting to 19 assists in the first half is awful good. We shared the ball real well and have done that all year… but we have been making the shots.”

MSU has struggled shooting the ball from the floor during a 10-game losing streak, but had a stellar game from the floor, knocking down 38-of-66 field goals and 11-of-20 3-pointers. The 65 points MSU had at halftime, eclipsing the game point totals in 11 contests this season.

“There isn't really anything magic or special we did differently. We hit 64 percent instead of 28 percent. It comes down to having Thomas Korf (R-Fr., F, St. Cloud, Minn.) eat a vegetable bagel for breakfast. It's that goofy,” Stewart said.

MSU built a 65-38 halftime lead behind Adam Randall (R-Fr., G, Steele, N.D.) and Chris East (So., G, Toronto, Ontario). Randall scored all of his 16 points in the first half and East netted 14 of his team-high 25 before the break.

“Adam was attacking the basket much better today,” Stewart said. “Chris didn't try to do too many things. I think he didn't take a shot from outside two feet. Easton Page (Fr., G, Carrington, N.D.) and Matt Yale (R-Fr., G, Berthold, N.D.) both come off the bench and go 2 for 3 on 3s, kids feed off of that.”

While MSU's scoring and shooting were a big part of the overall story, the Beavers also did a good job of taking care of the ball. MSU finished with 12 turnovers, many late in the game, and had 25 assists. Stewart pointed to guard Yonas Behre (Jr., Toronto, Ontario) as a big part of that.

“Yonas is a very good point guard and he has been frustrated in the fact that he has gotten the ball to our guys in great spots and we have made the shot,” said Stewart. “Today, he has eight assists and just one turnover, that's big-time college basketball.”

Keyano did have four players in double figures, paced by the all-around solid game by Zach Alger-Waldher who scored 26 points and dished out six assists. Jesse Denscombe added 14 and Demaine Nelson and Cameron Smith chipped in with 11 each.

Along with East and Randall, MSU had four other players in double figures. Korf hit four 3-pointers on his way to 18 points and added eight assists. Josh Johnson scored 15 points, pulled down five rebounds and finished with three steals, while Jonas Pollard (Sr., G, Mesa, Ariz.) finished with 11 and Page 10 for MSU. East earned a double-double with 11 rebounds to go with his points and Randall had eight rebounds and four assists in the win.

“It feels a lot better for at least a few days,” Stewart said when asked about the win. “Winning… for anyone who isn't in athletics, it is tough to describe, but going out of 2011 with a win is a big thing for us right now.”
