MINOT, N.D. – Black Hills State's post combination of Will John Johnson and Luke Enos were too much to handle for Minot State University.
The duo combined for 37 points and 34 rebounds to pace the No. 5 Yellow Jackets to a 69-50 win over the Beavers in Dakota Athletic Conference men's basketball Friday at the MSU Dome.
“They did a great job of scoring inside, give them credit,” said MSU assistant coach Steve Grabowski. “But we didn't put the ball in the hoop and when you take that many shots, there are going to be a lot of rebounds. When the ball doesn't go in, it doesn't matter how good you play on defense, it's going to look ugly.”
Grabowski filled in for head coach Peter Stewart as Stewart was serving a one-game suspension after picking up two technical fouls against Dickinson State last Wednesday.
The Yellow Jackets (11-2 DAC, 22-5 overall) avenged a 63-60 loss to the Beavers in Spearfish, S.D., about a month ago.
In Friday's loss, the Beavers (5-8, 11-16) struggled from the floor, hitting just 20 of 62 shots. The Beavers were a paltry 7 of 33 in the first half and struggled to a 3 for 18 showing on 3-pointers.
“It was a combination of missing good shots and then we had a couple that were rushed and out of character,” Grabowski said. “(In the win in January, MSU's pick and roll worked well) but the difference was this time we didn't get the ball swung around for open looks. We didn't do what we wanted to do with it (the pick and roll play).”
After about the 10 minute mark, it was all BHSU as the Yellow Jackets pushed an eight-point lead to double figures. It reached 20 and stayed within a couple of points either way the rest of the night.
“I thought the effort was there, the guys tried to play hard,” said Grabowski. “But we didn't put the ball in the hole and I had hoped we would be a better offensively. We missed some open shots and missed some free throws (MSU was just 7 of 14 from the line) – those are momentum killers.”
The main reason for the Yellow Jackets' lead was Johnson. He finished with 23 points, 22 rebounds, including double figures on both the offensive (12) and defensive ends (10) and dished out four assists. Enos chipped in with 14 points and 12 rebounds for Black Hills. The duo outrebounded MSU 34-31.
MSU got 13 points apiece from
Anthony Enriquez (Jr., G, Tacoma, Wash.) and
Jason West (Sr., G, Lompoc, Calif.), but did not have another player in double figures.
Kelvin Fraser (Jr., F, Brooklyn, N.Y.) pulled down 11 rebounds, have five points, four blocks and three assists.
The Beavers finish off the regular season with a 6 p.m. matchup with No. 25 South Dakota Mines Saturday at the Dome.
