BOX SCORE GAME 1
BOX SCORE GAME 2
MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University baseball played two completely different styles of games Saturday against Mayville State.
Unfortunately, the Beavers came up on the losing end on both of them.
Minot State was defeated by the Comets 3-1 in a pitcher's duel in game 1 and fell 11-9 in a slugfest in game 2 in Dakota Athletic Conference baseball at Corbett Field.
The games were originally scheduled for Mayville, but were moved to MSU's Corbett Field Saturday morning.
Minot never got the bats going in game 1 as Mayville's Sam Hirchert and Dan Bauer combined for a three-hitter. Hirchert got the win going 5 2/3 innings, giving up one run and three hits. Bauer nailed down the save with 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
The Beavers got a solo home run from
Kory Houston (Sr., OF, Minot, N.D.) in the sixth, but only had singles by
Connor Moughtin (Fr., C, Victoria, British Columbia) and
Ryne Hornecker (Jr., SS, Minot, N.D.) throughout the game.
Tanner Lorenz (Sr., P, Harvey, N.D.) was the tough-luck loser as he pitched well enough to win. Lorenz gave up just two earned runs and seven hits while striking out six over six innings pitched, but fell to 2-5 on the season.
In game 2, Minot State busted out for 15 hits and nine runs, but gave up 13 hits and 11 runs, including six in the first and four in the eighth.
The Beavers (4-8 DAC, 12-18 overall) got back in the game after trailing 6-1 after one inning by scoring four in the top of the second to cut the Mayville lead to 6-5. MSU took a brief 8-7 lead with two in the top of the eighth but gave them right back as the Comets scored four in the bottom of the inning.
Jordan Gilmour (So., OF, Gatineau, Quebec) had four hits, scored three runs and knocked in two for the Beavers. Moughtin added two hits and three RBIs,
Jaret Chatwood (Sr., C/Util., Red Deer, Alberta) added two hits and two RBIs and
Mitch Olson (So., 3B/1B, Deloraine, Manitoba) went 3-for-3. Moughtin and Hornecker had home runs for MSU.
The Comets Brock Gnadt gave up three runs in 1 2/3 innings pitched but got the win, while Bauer picked up his second save in as many games.
Shane Seddon (Jr., P, Winnipeg, Manitoba) suffered the loss for MSU.
The Beavers are scheduled to play a double header at Jamestown College to make up for a loss date earlier in the season on Monday.
