DICKINSON, N.D. – Minot State University couldn't solve Jamestown College pitching as the Jimmies held a red-hot MSU team to just eight hits in a 5-2 win at the Dakota Athletic Conference Tournament Friday at the Southside Park.
The loss ends the Beavers run at the tournament and their season, finishing at 16-23 overall. MSU won three of the five games it played at the DAC Tournament.
“We feel pretty good overall with how we played here,” said MSU head coach
Brock Weppler. “We certainly wanted to win this game, but we showed some heart and had some fight down here and I'll take that any day. We knew that we weren't going to get an at large bid, so the focus all year was on the tournament.”
MSU's run in the tournament coincided with its end of a string of games where the Beavers hammered the ball. MSU had at least nine runs and 12 hits in every game during the tournament until Friday's loser out game. Jamestown College's Brennan Grubb limited the Beavers to four hits and just one run.
“He threw well,” Weppler said of Grubb. “He slowed us down a little big. We clawed back late.”
The Beavers got four hits and one run off of JC reliever Chad Bolt during a rally in the ninth, but left the bases loaded in the final inning.
“Up until that point, I figured we would get the big hit and maybe tie it. That's how we played all tournament,” said Weppler. “I liked our fight – I just wish we could have come back one more time.”
The Jimmies () took advantage of three home runs as Griffin Sweazey, Kyle Mallory and Tim Spivey all hit HRs.
Jordan Gilmour (So., OF, Gatineau, Ontario),
Jaret Chatwood (Sr., C/DH, Red Deer, Alberta) and
Kory Houston (Sr., OF, Minot, N.D.) all finished with two hits. Houston had a double among his hits.
Ryne Hornecker (Jr., SS, Minot, N.D.) and
Mitch Olson (So., 1B, Deloraine, Manitoba) finished with one RBI each.
Anthony Friesen (So., P, Somerset, Manitoba) suffered the loss for the Beavers, going seven innings, giving up five runs and eight hits.
Jamestown College moves on to face Mayville State in the conference tournament championship game.
