SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Minot State University head coach Travis Ward didn't sign up for the job for moral victories.
Still, he was pretty positive after pushing Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opponent Bemidji State to five games in the MSU Beavers first taste of life as an NCAA Division II team.
“We know now that we can play with team like Bemidji and put ourselves into a position to win the match,” Ward said. “We can compete with them, we just didn't have enough in the end.”
Minot State fell in game 5 15-10 after splitting the first four (12-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-16) in the Beavers first match at the University of Sioux Falls Active Ankle Invitational Friday. MSU plays the host Cougars in the nightcap.
While Ward was pleased, he also felt like his team handled the loss in a positive way.
“We have a little chip on our shoulders. We feel we should be 1-0 right and there is almost a level of disappointment,” he said. “We also gained a little confidence in this one and are looking forward to playing more of the Division IIs down here.”
MSU's Emily Byrne (Fr., S, Reno, Nev.) paced the offense with 33 assists, while sophomore Jen Dixon (OH, Brandon, Manitoba) added 18 kills on .316 hitting percentage.
