Hot shooting Hardrockers down Beavers

MSU's home opener spoiled by Mines

Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University and South Dakota Mines men's basketball teams were on polar opposite ends of the shooting spectrum Friday night.

The Hardrockers were a blistering 69.6 percent from the floor in the first half and 57.4 percent overall.

The Beavers had their shooting woes and subsequent frustration follow them home from an opening-season road swing. Minot State hit 40.7 percent in the first half and 42 percent overall.

Those discrepancies in shooting led to the Beavers falling in the home opener 73-60 to South Dakota Mines in nonconference NCAA Division II action at the MSU Dome.

The Beavers (2-15 overall) played its first game at home since an October 2011 exhibition game against the University of North Dakota due to its transition to NCAA Division II. Unfortunately, the Hardrockers (8-7) spoiled the debut.

SDM jumped out to an 18 point lead behind the fantastic shooting start. The Hardrockers hit 16-of-23 shots from the floor, including 4 for 6 from beyond the arc and 7 for 8 from the free-throw line. In fact, Mines missed just 23 times the entire game between field goals and free throws.

The Beavers weren't rock bottom shooting, but couldn't match the Mines' baskets or the Hardrockers intensity until midway through the second half.

MSU went with a small lineup where 6-foot-5 redshirt freshman forward Thomas Korf (St. Cloud, Minn.) was the Beavers tallest player. That group cut the once 25-point lead to just 13 twice in the second half - once a free throw by Matt Yale (R-Fr., G, Berthold, N.D.) and then by a Yale jumper with 4:26 to play in the second half.

The Hardrockers scored the game's next six points to end any hope of a Beavers' comeback.

Mines' Kyle Doerr scored a game-high 19 points and Nathan Jacobson added 18 in the win. Tanner Friesen added eight points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals for SDM.

Jonas Pollard (Sr., G, Mesa, Ariz.) paced MSU with 14 points. Korf hit three 3-pointers to scored 13 points and added two steals. Josh Johnson (Jr., F, Lufkin, Texas) added nine points and eight rebounds for MSU.

The Beavers will look to rebound Saturday as they play host to Black Hills State beginning at 6 p.m.
