Beavers come close

Minot State falls in double overtime against No. 13 Colorado Mines

Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. – Minot State University needed one more stop, one more basket, one more play of any type to knock off its first ranked NCAA Division II opponent.

Instead, the Beavers will have to settle for giving a huge scare to No. 13 Colorado Mines.

Minot State's Josh Johnson (Sr., F, Lufkin, Texas) sent the game into overtime and Dominique McDonald (Fr., G, Raleigh, N.C.) forced a second, but it was CSM's Brian Muller who hit a huge 3-pointer to lift the Orediggers to an 87-83 double overtime win in nonconference NCAA Division II men's basketball Saturday at Lockridge Arena.

“We faced multiple situations where we could have folded, both with things outside of our control and inside our control,” said MISU head coach Matt Murken. “I thought we were mentally tougher than we were last night. We were competitive and gave ourselves a chance to win.”

The Beavers (0-2 overall) pushed the nationally ranked Orediggers on the second night of a road double header. Minot State held CSM to 43 percent shooting and outrebounded the Orediggers 46-42.

“I'm proud of how hard we competed,” Murken said. “The best thing is we have only begun to show how good we can be. There are things we need to fix. This game reinforces that one play can win or lose a game. You have to focus and lock in. We are happy with how hard we played, bt we aren't happy with how the game ended.”

Johnson capped a late rally to tie the game at 69 on a dunk with six second remaining. McDonald's 3-pointer with a minute remaining in the first overtime knotted the contest at 76.

But Muller's 3-pointer with 1:35 remaining in the second overtime gave the Orediggers (1-0) a cushion they didn't relinquish. Mines outscored Minot state 11-7 in the second overtime.

Minot State pushed to a 35-30 lead at halftime behind a Chris East (Jr., G, Toronto, Ontario) dunk, a 3-pointer by Thomas Korf (So., F, St. Cloud, Minn.), a McDonald jumper and another dunk by Anthony Enriquez (Sr., G, Tacoma, Wash.) down the stretch.

Colorado Mines took an eight-point lead in the second half, before Minot State closed late to send it to overtime.

Muller had a big night for the Orediggers, scoring 28 points and dished out three assists. He went 12 for 13 from the free-throw line, helping CSM to a 25-8 advantage from the line. He also paced five players for the Orediggers in double figures.

Minot State also had five players in double figures, paced by McDonald's career-high 21 points. He also had five assists and four rebounds for the Beavers. E.J. Williams (Jr., G, Raleigh, N.C.) scored 14 points, Johnson 12 points and seven rebounds, Isiah Gandy (Jr., G, West Palm Beach, Fla.)11 points and Kelvin Fraser (Sr., F, Brooklyn, N.Y.) 10 points and two blocks.

The Beavers have one more big nonconference road test as they play at NCAA Division I and 2012 NCAA Tournament team University of Montana in exhibition play in Missoula, Mont. Wednesday (8 p.m.).
