Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Welcome back, Mr. Fraser.
Minot State University's
Kelvin Fraser (Sr., F, Brooklyn, N.Y.), after a redshirt season, was back to his old disruptive self in the Beavers home opener.
Fraser, the team's all-time leader in blocked shots, finished with four more, a game-high 15 points and seven rebounds in MISU's 86-27 win over NCAA Division III Northland College in NCAA Division II men's basketball Sunday at the MSU Dome.
“We knew because of their size up front we could get the ball in the post more,” said Fraser. “We definitely used that to our advantage today.”
The Beavers (1-2 overall) outmanned the smaller Lumberjacks – a refreshing change of pace for Minot State as the Beavers played road games against two nationally ranked DII teams and NCAA Division I University of Montana to start the season.
“It was great to be at home,” said MISU head coach
Matt Murken. “We had tough 10 days on the road playing two ranked teams in Denver and DI Montana. I thought our guys came out hungry today and really worked defensively. We picked up full court for most of the first half and created some offense off of that.”
It was the first official win for Murken as he took over the MISU job in July.
Minot State pushed to a 49-10 lead at halftime behind solid 59-percent shooting, but even better, 19.2 percent shooting from Northland College. MISU held NC to just five first-half field goals including no 3-points and no free throws.
The Beavers also had balance in the scoring sheet as Fraser and fellow senior
Josh Johnson (F, Lufkin, Texas) were the only players to reach double figures scoring as Johnson netted 10 points. MISU had all 11 players in uniform score and seven hit for seven or more points.
“We have some depth and some guys with different talents in the different areas,” Murken said. “We did a good job of making the extra pass today, and we settled in nicely and made it easy for each other.”
Thomas Korf (So., F, St. Cloud, Minn.) and
Isiah Gandy (Jr., G, West Palm Beach, Fla.) each scored nine points for MISU, while
Chris East (Jr., G, Toronto, Ontario) and
Dan Yale (Fr., G, Berthold, N.D.) added eight points each. Gandy pulled down seven rebounds, Korf hit two 3-points and swiped three steals and East led the Beavers with nine rebounds.
“I think we played great as a team,” Korf said. “Everyone contributed today, both offense and defense. It was a great team effort.”
Northland College (0-2 overall) got eight points from Carnell Sheppard as he hit the only 3-pointer in the game for the Lumberjacks. Adrian Flores added six points and six rebounds in the loss.
The Beavers are now off until conference game pick up after the Thanksgiving break. Minot State plays at rival University of Mary Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. The game, along with the women's game against the Marauders (5 p.m.) are at the Bismarck Civic Center.
