Balance key in Beavers win

Minot State places five in double figures in win over Concordia College

Box Score MINOT, N.D. – In its first three games, Minot State University did not score more than 58 points in any single contest.

But the Beavers didn't have offensive balance like they did Tuesday.

Minot State had five players in double figures and used that balance to outscore NCAA Division III Concordia College 84-71 Tuesday in nonconference NCAA Division II women's basketball at the Minot State Dome.

“We were able to get the ball inside when we needed to, we hit shots from the outside, shot well from behind the three point line, and we were able to penetrate pretty well,” said MISU head coach Sheila Green Gerding. “So that's a pretty good combination offensively when you can get all the things you want.”

The Beavers (2-0 overall) pulled away and allowed Concordia College (1-3 overall) back into the game all night. Minot State led by as many as 17 points – on a Sacarra Molina (Sr., G, Hinsdale, Mont.) 3-pointer from Savana Kingsbury (Fr., F, Omaha, Neb.) with 3:12 remaining in the game – but couldn't shake the Cobbers.

“I think they (Concordia College) rely a lot on their outside game. They have some pretty good perimeter people and if you key too much on them they throw it over the top,” Green Gerding said. “We got caught a few times, but overall it was working hard defensively that helped us tonight. We try not to give up penetration and give up open 3s.”

Molina was a big reason the Beavers pushed out to the lead as the senior was a point shy of her career high, scoring 21 points to lead Minot State. She scores 16 points in the second half, hitting 9 of 9 free throws in the second.

But it was the Beavers overall balance that keyed the win as Carly Boag (Jr., F, Tamworth, Australia) scored 18, Morgan Klose (So., G, Fairview, N.D.) added 11 and both Alisha Jones (Jr., G, Kileen, Texas) and Kingsbury hit for 10.

“Our teamwork was great tonight because we were always looking for each other and we crash the boards hard,” Boag said.

The Cobbers had three players in double figures, paced by its 3-point sharpshooters Alley Fisher, Erika Jossart and Emily Thesing. Fisher scored 17 points, Jossart 16 and Thesing 14. The trio combined to hit 8 of 17 3-pointers, while the rest of the team went 0 for 5.

Boag finished with another double-double, her second of the season, pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds to go with her 18 points. She added three steals and two assists. Kingsbury was solid on the boards as well, collecting six rebounds.

“I played one of my better games, but my team is always there for me,” said Kingsbury. “I wouldn't be having success without my teammates helping me.”

Minot State is now off for the Thanksgiving holiday and will resume play in a key Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference showdown with intrastate University of Mary in the NSIC opener for both teams Dec. 1 at the Bismarck Civic Center.
