Slow start costs Beavers

Minot State trails early, can't recover at UM Crookston

Box Score CROOKSTON, Minn. – It couldn't go much worse at the start for Minot State University.

The Beavers missed their 11 of their first 12 shots and turned the ball over 14 times in the first half to fall 66-46 at Minnesota Crookston in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball Friday at Lysaker Gymnasium.

Minot State (4-2 overall, 2-2 NSIC) went on to hit just four first-half field goals and trailed 41-15 at halftime as the Golden Eagles (4-4 overall, 1-3 NSIC) drilled 14 of 33 shots and four 3-pointers.

UMC cooled off a bit in the second half and finished shooting just 35.3 percent from the floor, exactly the same as the Beavers as MISU hit 51.9 percent in the second half, but finished with 17 more shots than Minot State. The Beavers turnover problem along with a 13-5 Golden Eagle advantage on the offensive glass produced the lopsided shot totals.

A trio of Golden Eagles' players reached double figures as Ashley Martell (15 points), Ebony Livingston (10) and Brittani Wiese (10) all scored at least 10. Livingston and Laurie Tyson pulled down nine rebounds for game-high honors.

Francesca DeAngelis (Sr., G, Laguna Niguel, Calif.) paced Minot State with 13 points in 17 minutes of play. Lauren Safranski (Sr., G, Burnsville, Minn.) added eight points, hitting 2 of 3 3-pointers, in the loss. Bridger Rice (Fr., F, Savage, Mont.) pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Beavers.

It was the second-straight setback for Minot State after charging out to a 4-0 start to the season. Minot State will look to regroup with an NSIC battle with  Bemidji State Saturday at Bemidji, Minn.
