Beavers roll past Brandon

Minot State forces 39 Bobcat turnovers in win

Box Score MINOT, N.D. – For the first four minutes, Minot State University looked a like a team on a 11-day layoff between games.

The final 36 minutes made up for it.

The Beavers didn't hit a shot from the floor until a jumper by Alisha Jones (Jr., G, Midland, Texas) with 16:26 to play in the first half, but finished with 51 in the half and 92 overall in a 92-42 win over Brandon (Manitoba) University in nonconference NCAA Division II women's basketball Sunday at the MSU Dome.

Minot State (6-3 overall) forced BU (1-11) into 39 turnovers, finishing with a season-high 20 steals in the win.

“It was good for us to get going, get into game speed and play again,” said MISU head coach Sheila Green Gerding. “The bottom line was for us to accomplish what we wanted to and I think we did that. We needed to get in a game situation, get up and down the court and get some kids some playing time.”

The Beavers did get everyone in the game and everyone who saw action scored. MISU got great contributions from reserves Francesca DeAngelis (Sr., G, Laguna Niguel, Calif.), Sarah Lester (Fr., G, Frenchtown, Mont.) and Amanda Sansaver (Fr., G, Wolf Point, Mont.) who combined for 32 of the team's 44 bench points.

“Amanda had probably her best game of the season,” Green Gerding said. “I was happy for Frannie as well. She has turned the corner for us. She has been in and out for us at times, but her focus has been there for the last couple of weeks. Frannie can do some things for us with her ability to post up and get to the basket.”

DeAngelis (14 points) and Lester (10) were two of five players to score in double figures for the Beavers as Carly Boag (Jr., F, Tamworth, Australia) had a game-high 16 points and five rebounds, while Sacarra Molina (Sr., G, Hinsdale, Mont.) added 14 points and four steals and Morgan Klose (So., G, Fairview, N.D.) added 12 points. Boag scored 10 of her 16 in a personal 10-2 run to start the second half.

“Carly created for herself and got into transition early in the second half,” said Green Gerding. “It wasn't something we set up, just she came ready to play in the second half.”

The Bobcats were paced by 14 points from Aimee Johnston, while Chantel Gaslard pulled down 11 rebounds and added four points and two blocks in the loss.

Sasaver just missed being the sixth MISU player in double figures as she finished with eight points, but added five steals, five assists and three rebounds in 27 minutes at the point guard position.

Minot State gets back into Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play this weekend as the Beavers travel to Minnesota Duluth Friday (6 p.m.) and St. Cloud State Saturday (4 p.m.).
