Beavers settle for split

MSU gets walk off win from Scott Peters, can't secure sweep

MESA, Ariz. – Minot State University's Scott Peters (Sr., DH, Altona, Manitoba) continued his torrid pace in the desert with a game-winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Beavers to a 5-4 win over Mayville State Friday at the Russ Matt Greater Phoenix Invitational at Gene Autry Stadium.

The win helped MSU to a split of a pair of games Friday with the Comets. Mayville won the second game 9-1.

Peters finished with two hits, his fifth multi-hit game at the Russ Matt. He drove in two in the game.

“I really felt like we were going to score in that inning,” said MSU head coach Brock Weppler. “We had the right guys up, our middle of the lineup has been hitting real well and we have a couple of guys who I thought would drive in the run.”

MSU opened the inning with a single by Jordan Gilmour (Jr., OF, Gatineau, Manitoba). He moved up on Mike Turcotte's (Jr., OF, Victoria, British Columbia) sacrifice bunt and scored two batters later.

The win was the second win over Mayville in MSU's last at bat this week.

Minot's Paul Thompson (Sr., P, Pierson, Manitoba) nearly pitched well enough to win. He went 5 2/3 innings, giving up nine hits and four runs, but was pulled in favor of Jamin Heller (So., P, Lethbridge, Alberta) after a walk in the sixth. Heller finished the game, giving up no hits and racking up a strikeout in the win.

Gilmour had three hits, Turcotte two and Caleb Heilman (Sr., INF, Burlington, N.D.) added a hit for the Beavers total of eight.

In the second game, Minot State couldn't get the key hit and Mayville State did. The Comets struck for five in the fourth to blow open the game.

“We didn't make the plays in the field behind our pitchers and we couldn't get a key hit when we needed,” Weppler said. “That was pretty much the difference.”

Gilmour was the only MSU player with multiple hits, going 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Austin Zorn (Fr., P, Bismarck, N.D.) suffered the loss, going just three innings, while giving up five runs on six hits. He did strike out five batters.

The Beavers finish their trip to Phoenix with a pair of single games, taking on William Paterson University and Johns Hopkins University Saturday.
