BILLINGS, Mont. – Minot State University never got its bats going.
The Beavers were held to eight hits over 16 innings as Montana State-Billings swept Minot State 8-2 and 4-0 in nonconference NCAA Division II baseball Sunday at Dehler Park.
“It was kind of the same situation as yesterday,” said MSU head coach
Brock Weppler. “We got some hits, but we never really got the big hit we were looking for. We didn't get it done at the plate. I really think we miss Moughtin (
Conner Moughtin, So., C, Victoria, British Columbia).”
Moughtin, who is batting .295 with a home run and nine RBIs, has been sidelined since the end of the Arizona trip with an injury.
The Beavers (5-21 overall) had six hits in game 1, but didn't push across runs until the top of the ninth.
Jordan Gilmour (Jr., OF, Gatineau, Manitoba) knocked home both with a hit. Gilmour and
Scott Peters (Sr., DH, Altona, Manitoba) finished the game with two hits each.
Paul Thompson (Sr., P, Pierson, Manitoba) pitched six innings, giving up four runs (three earned) and five hits.
“We had stretches where we hit pretty well, but at times we struggled to get big hits,” Weppler said.
Game 2 was a pitching duel after the second inning as MSU's
Austin Zorn (Fr., P, Bismarck, N.D.) settled in after giving up four runs in the first two innings. He went the distance, giving up the four runs on 10 hits. He was upstaged, however, by Billings' Matt Eames who tossed a two-hitter.
“We ran into a real good pitcher in the second one,” Weppler said. “Zorn pitched a good game after the first two innings. He was up in the zone. But after that, he settled down and pitched a good game.”
Ben Sansaver (Jr., INF, Kalispell, Mont.) and
Shayne Court (Jr., OF, Red Deer, Alberta) both had singles for the Beavers, while Sansaver finished the game with two stolen bases.
The Beavers are off until April 6-7 when they travel to the University of Sioux Falls for two double headers.
