Beavers drop two tough ones

MSU falls by a single run in both games at William Jewell

LIBERTY, Mo. – Minot State University couldn't get a couple of key hits during a pair of pitcher's duels at William Jewell College in nonconference NCAA Division II baseball Saturday.

The Beavers fell 3-2 in game 1 and 2-1 in eight innings in game 2.

While the Beavers were edged in pitching duels, head coach Brock Weppler wasn't overly happy with his staff.

“The pitching was better over the course of two games that it has been at times, but I wasn't really that happy with how we threw,” he said. “It was a number of things that went wrong, but we gave up four walks in an inning that led to a run without a hit. We have to be better.”

MSU (0-10 overall) fell behind 2-0 after two innings, but got them back with two of its own in the top of the third. Connor Moughtin (So., C, Victoria, British Columbia) and Mitch Olson (Jr., 3B, Deloraine, Manitoba) both drove in runs in the inning. Olson paced the Beavers with two hits in the game.

But WJC pushed across the eventual game winner with a run in the bottom of the inning. Neither team was able to score and combined for just five hits over the final four innings as a steady, strong wind blew in from left field.

“Neither team hit real well because of the wind,” Weppler said.

Paul Thompson (Sr., P, Pierson, Manitoba) was saddled with the loss despite giving up five hits and three runs over four innings of work. He walked five, however, to go with three strikeouts.

“We needed to have a better overall approach at the plate,” said Weppler. “I thought their first pitcher was solid, but I didn't think the second guy was great. We just didn't hit him.

Game 2 was even more frustrating for the Beavers as starting pitcher Cole Stober (Jr., Hays, Alberta) allowed just three hits and one run over six innings in the loss.

Jordan Gilmour (Jr., OF, Gatineau, Quebec) finished with two hits and Trey Jacobson (Fr., OF, Alexander, N.D.) drove in the only run for MSU.
“It was a typical road trip. We travel 15 hours by bus and then have to face a number of things including their umpiring crew,” Weppler said. “I thought we outplayed them overall. We outhit them and didn't have an error. We did everything but win the games.”
