HARVEY, N.D. – Minot State University's lack of production early came back to haunt the Beavers.
Minot State stranded five runners in scoring position in the first three innings and never fully recovered as Jamestown College held off a couple late charges to take a 7-6 win in nonconference baseball Wednesday at Loerch Field.
The Beavers were forced to play its home opener in Harvey due to Corbett Field renovations following the flooding in Minot this past summer.
The Beavers (6-25 overall) didn't capitalize on early chances, but the Jimmies (21-11-1) did. JC scored two runs in the third, two in the fifth and a single run in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead. The two biggest plays were a two-run home run by Nico Moreno and an error by Minot State on what looked to be a routine double play.
“We have to make some adjustments. We can't continue to take our approach to the game and expect different results,” said MSU head coach
Brock Weppler. “We talked a lot about it after the game, we need to change the way we carry ourselves or we are going to continue to lose games like this.”
The Beavers lost their ninth one-run ball game this season and outhit Jamestown College 13-10 in the game. But, the Beavers also finished with two more errors (3-1) than the Jimmies and couldn't get an extra big hit early and even late as MSU pulled to within one run three straight innings.
“Our bats woke up a little in the seventh and the dugout woke up a little, but it needs to be the entire game,” Weppler said.
MSU got three in the seventh to pull to 5-4, but gave up single runs in the top of the eighth and ninth as JC kept the Beavers at bay.
Wesley Hardy picked up the win for JC in relief of starter Adam Ranger.
Cole Stober (Jr., P, Hays, Alberta) suffered the loss, going five innings, giving up three earned runs and striking out eight.
MSU had four players with multi-hit games paced by
Jordan Gilmour's (Jr., OF, Gatineau, Quebec) 3-for-4 performance in the leadoff spot. He scores to runs as well.
Caleb Heilman (Sr., 3B, Burlington, N.D.) was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, while
Scott Peters (Sr., DH, Altona, Manitoba) and
Connor Moughtin (So., C, Victoria, British Columbia) were each 2 for 5. Moughtin drove in a run as well.
Mike Turcotte (Jr., OF, Victoria, British Columbia) drove in two and scored two runs for the Beavers.
MSU plays a single 9-inning game next Tuesday at NCAA Division I University of North Dakota.
