Beavers score three in the seventh for come-from-behind win

MSU splits with Dickinson State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DICKINSON, N.D. – Minot State University baseball scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a come-from-behind win over Dickinson State and earn a split of a pair of nonconference NCAA Division II baseball here Wednesday.
The Beavers lost game 2 11-2 as DiSU scored all 11 run in innings 3-4-5.

“I was interested in how we would react coming into the seventh down a run with all of the one-run games we had all season,” said MSU head coach Brock Weppler. “We buckled down on the mound and buckled down in the field and got the win.”

In game 1, MSU entered the seventh down 4-3, but scored three to take a 6-4 lead. Connor Moughtin (So., C, Victoria, British Columbia) had the big hit, driving in two with a single, while Mitch Olson (Jr., 1B, Deloraine, Manitoba) drove in a run with a fielder's choice.

MSU starter Cole Stober (Jr., P, Hays, Alberta) gave up a run on two quick hits in the bottom of the seventh to make things a little more interesting than Weppler wanted. But Stober got a ground out and a strike out to close the door on DSU and secure the win.

The Beavers scored two runs in the top of the first and a single run in the top of the fourth, but was matched in the bottom half of the inning both times. After the Blue Hawks pushed across a run in the bottom of the fifth, it looked like MSU might be on the short end of another one-run game.

“It definitely had that feel to it,” Weppler said.

Jordan Gilmour (Jr., OF, Gatineau, Quebec), Mike Turcotte (Jr., OF, Victoria, British Columbia) and Andrew Roach (R-Fr., OF, Gilbert, Ariz.) all finished with two hits for the Beavers.

Stober went the distance, giving up just five runs and eight hits for his third win of the season.

MSU (8-29 overall) carried early momentum into game 2 but couldn't sustain it. MSU lead 2-0 after a scoring two more in the top of the first, but were allowed just two hits after the first.

“We got four in the first, but two more the rest of the way,” Weppler said. “We got up in the zone on the mound after that and they scored some runs.”

MSU's Zane Sawyer (Fr., P, Virden, Manitoba) was solid through the first two innings, but struggled in the third and fourth innings as Dickinson State scored two in the third and six in the fourth.

Gilmour and Turcotte again led the way as they each went 2 for 3 in the game 2 and 4 for 5 in the series.
“They found ways to get on all day,” said Weppler.

MSU finishes out the week with a pair of double headers over the weekend, taking on the University of Winnipeg Saturday and Sunday in Harvey, N.D. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. each day.
