Minot State stymied by DI NDSU

Beavers finish with just six hits and one run against Bison

Box Score FARGO, N.D. – Minot State University baseball's bats were silenced by a trio of North Dakota State pitchers and one great relay throw.

MSU mustered just six hits and scored its only run on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth as the Bison topped the Beavers 6-1 in nonconference NCAA baseball Tuesday at Newman Outdoor Stadium.

Division I NDSU improved to 33-11, while Minot State, in its final season transitioning from NAIA to NCAA Division II, fell to 9-31.
NDSU starter Anthony Kliniske earned the win going five innings, giving up four hits, while relievers Jake Heck and Mark Hermes allowed one hit each for the Bison.

The Beavers threatened to score in the fourth as Scott Peters (Sr., DH, Altona, Manitoba) doubled to right center with Mitch Olson (Jr., 1B, Deloraine, Manitoba) on first. Olson, however, was thrown out at home on a perfect relay by the Bison. Connor Moughtin (So., C, Victoria, British Columbia) singled after the Peters double, but Peters was held. NDSU got out of the inning unscathed.

The bottom of the third and the top of the fourth proved to be a pivotal juncture in the game as NDSU plated four in the bottom half and then cut down MSU's answer in the top of the fourth.

The Bison opened the inning with a double by John Skrbec and a single on a bunt by Max Casper. MSU looked to poised to get out of the inning without much damage as Casper was throw out on steal attempt by Moughtin and Tim Colwell flied out scoring Skrbec for a 1-0 lead. But NDSU went on to score three more runs on three hits, a walk and a MSU error.

Minot State starter Cole Stober (Jr., P, Hays, Alberta) suffered the loss, but was solid over five innings. He gave up eight hits and five runs allowing the four-run third. He allowed a pair of hits and a single run in the fifth before giving way to relievers. Paul Thompson (Sr., P, Pierson, Manitoba) pitched two innings, giving up one run and one hit, while striking out one. Joel Peterman (Sr., P, Red Deer, Alberta) pitched a scoreless inning for MSU.

Nick Colwell finished with two hits and scored two runs for NDSU. Wes Satzinger knocked in two runs in the win.

Doug Richter (Jr., INF, Williston, N.D.) scored the Beavers lone run after singling in the ninth. He scored on a wild pitch after moving over on a single by Caleb Heilman (Sr., 3B, Burlington, N.D.) and an NDSU error. No MSU player finished with multiple hits, but Olson reached three times via base on balls.

The Beavers finish off its 2012 season with a four-game set at the University of Winnipeg Saturday and Sunday. MSU begins play in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in 2013.
