'Big 3' powers Beavers

Minot State gets school-record tying 37 points from Carly Boag

Box Score MINOT, N.D. – For much of the season, Minot State University has relied on its combination of post Carly Boag (Jr., Tamworth, Australia) and guard Sacarra Molina (Sr., Hinsdale, Mont.).

But lately, a third member has looked to join the duo.

On Friday, senior guard Francesca DeAngelis (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) made it a trio.

DeAngelis scored a season-high 18 points, Boag netted 37 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Molina was steady with 12 points and four assists as Minot State pulled away from Upper Iowa 78-63 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball Friday at the MSU Dome.

“Frannie has been getting better and better every game. She has that scorer's mentality and that's what we like,” MISU head coach Sheila Green Gerding said of DeAngelis. “I was really proud of her and her effort and she seems to be getting better every game.”

The three-pronged attack helped the Beavers (7-5 overall, 3-5 NSIC) snap a five-game conference losing streak and two-game overall skid.

Boag was nearly unstoppable as she tied the Beavers' school record with 37 points on 15-of-18 shooting from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Boag tied Carol Hayes' school record originally set in 1998-99 and was the second time this season she scored more than 30 points in a game. She had three offensive rebounds, nine defensive, three assists, three steals and two blocks.

“Carly is a great player and sometimes she doesn't understand how we need her to shoot the ball and score,” Green Gerding said. “Tonight she looked really comfortable with the ball, getting it in one-on-one situations or flashing to the basket. We told her, honestly, as good of a performance as she had offensively, she was equally impressive on defense and we thought it was her best defensive effort to date.”

Minot State needed all of the “Big 3's” scoring as Upper Iowa (4-10, 1-6) did not go away. Minot State built a couple of double digit leads but the Peacocks kept cutting into those leads. UIU got it as close as 55-50 on a 3-pointer by Whitney Kieffer with 8:47 remaining.

But the Beavers went on a 19-8 run to take a 74-58 lead on free throws by Molina with 2:48 to play. Boag, DeAngelis and Molina scored all 19 points in the run.

“We wanted to get after it defensively,” Green Gerding said. “I thought our kids executed on defense very well. We thought that our defensive effort would lead to our offense and it did tonight. We did a great job of getting the ball where it needed to be.”

Kieffer finished with 28 points, hitting 5 of 8 3-pointers, and four steals to pace the Peacocks. Sam Thrapp added 10 points, while Carly Pagel had nine points and six rebounds.

MISU got a solid contribution from Amanda Sansaver (Fr., G, Wolf Point, Mont.), who dished out six assists and was steady at the point guard position. DeAngelis and Molina also finished with seven rebounds apiece in the win.

Minot State stays at home where it faces Winona State Saturday at 4 p.m.
