U-Mary fends off Beavers

Minot State battles, but can't get lead against Marauders

Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University kept cutting the University of Mary lead to a single possession.

The Marauders kept answering back.

U-Mary never relinquished the lead in the second half and pulled away down the stretch topping Minot State 70-58 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball in front of 1,167 fans at the Minot State Dome.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Minot State and was just the second home loss of the season for the Beavers.

“It's a disappointing way to play after coming off such a good weekend at home,” said MISU head coach Sheila Green Gerding. “We thought we had some advantages on the offensive end of the floor but we just couldn't execute when we needed to. On the defensive side, we need to give a better effort.”

The Beavers (8-6 overall, 4-6 NSIC) shot just 25.8 percent for the game and hits 1 of 19 3-pointers in the loss. What kept Minot State in the game was free throw shooting as MISU hit 23 of 28 from the foul line.

After the Marauders (11-5, 6-4) jumped out to an early seven point lead, the game tightened up. From the 10:51 mark of the first half, the U-Mary lead was never larger than nine and the margin was just one possession much of that stretch.

But the Beavers never took the lead during that span, tying it once in the first half, but failing to take a lead throughout a tight second half.

U-Mary was solid from the field as they hit 28 of 56 shots, but heated up in the second half as they knocked down 18 of 30.

Ali Collins led all scorers with 24 points and finished with 14 rebounds and five assists for the Marauders. She was joined in double figures by Lindsey Sand, who scored 12, and Shaunna Knife, who netted 10 in the win.

Carly Boag (Jr., F, Tamworth, Australia) scored 16 points and added 15 rebounds in the loss for Minot State. Francesca DeAngelis (Sr., G, Laguna Niguel, Calif.) added 14 points and Alisha Jones (Jr., G, Killeen, Texas) scored 13 points for the Beavers.

Minot State will have a short turnaround and a tough road trip ahead of them as the Beavers travel to Wayne State College and Augustana College, both ranked nationally, Friday and Saturday.

“We face two tough teams this weekend on the road and we have to come ready to play to compete down there,” Green Gerding said. “We are going to have to step up our intensity and execute our game plan. The way we played tonight won't get the job done moving forward.”
