Box Score MINOT, N.D. – With the way Tuesday's slugfest between Minot State University and the University of Mary was going, it figured the game would come down to a defensive play.
And who better to provide a big defensive stop than MISU's all-time block shots leader
Kelvin Fraser (Sr., F, Brooklyn, N.Y.).
Fraser's fifth block of the game negated a potential game-winning shot by U-Mary's Alex Dorr with 4 seconds remaining to preserve a 49-48 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball win at the Minot State Dome.
“We had some great shots early on but we just couldn't make them,” said MISU head coach
Matt Murken. “It was a physical game early and we couldn't convert and anytime that happens you just have to challenge your guys to keep getting those shots. I thought we did that and I also thought we would make more, which we didn't, but to give our guys credit they played very well defensively and that is why we won.”
The win was the first home NSIC win for the Beavers (5-9 overall, 4-6 NSIC) in their short history in the conference.
The win was set up by a pair of free throws for sophomore
Adam Randall (G, Steele, N.D.) with 1:19 to play in the contest. It gave the Beavers back the lead that changed hands 10 times over the final 7 minutes. Randall led the Beavers with 14 points and added five rebounds. He scored eight of the Beavers' final 13 points over the final eight minutes of the game.
“Adam is a kid that plays really hard,” Murken said. “He takes a lot of pride in coming to work every day and not letting his teammates down. He has figured some things out so that he can just play. He has that little something extra, he likes to do the dirty work and when he is playing well it definitely helps us as a team.”
It was the third time this season the Beavers limited an opponent to fewer than 50 points. Minot State, the conference's second best team in field-goal percentage defense, held U-Mary (3-10, 2-8) to just 38.1 percent shooting from floor and locked down the Marauders to the tune of just 8 of 22 shooting in the second half.
Minot State didn't shoot the ball very well in its own right, hitting just 19 of 61 shots from the floor, but took 19 more attempts from the floor than the Marauders. Part of that was 14 offensive rebounds and part of that was a 14-5 advantage in turnovers. The five turnovers were a season best for MISU.
Jalen Jaspers led all scorers with 19 points and added 10 rebounds in the loss for U-Mary. No other Marauder scored in double figures as Alex Dorr and Marc Musungayi added nine each. Dorr also pulled down eight rebounds.
Josh Johnson (Sr., F, Lufkin, Texas) has a solid return to the lineup with 12 points and six rebounds in 22 minutes. He pulled down four offensive rebounds and hit two 3-pointers. Fraser added five rebounds to his five blocks and
Thomas Korf (So., F, St. Cloud, Minn.) knocked down two 3-pointers for six points.
Minot State heads on the road to Wayne State College and Augustana College Friday and Saturday in NSIC play.
