Beavers lose free throw battle, game at SCSU

Minot State outscored by nine from the line in loss at St. Cloud State

Box Score ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Minot State University battled back from a double-digit deficit multiple times in the second half but couldn't complete the comeback falling 67-60 at St. Cloud State University Saturday at Halenbeck Hall.

The Beavers trailed by 12 with 12 minutes to play in the game, but cut it to five four times in the second half before time ran out.

“We told the kids that the bottom line is we feel we can play with everyone in the league,” said MISU head coach Sheila Green Gerding. “But we have to play hard on every possession, compete for every loose ball and every rebound and I felt for the most part we did that tonight. We walk away with a totally different feeling than last night.”

Minot State (6-5 overall, 2-5 NSIC) had its best chance to get it under five with just over four minutes to play. After a Bridger Rice (Fr., F, Savage, Mont.) hit a short jumper, MISU forced a turnover. But, the Beavers gave it back on one of their 25 turnovers in the game and SCSU converted on the other end to push the lead back to seven.

It was the second straight night turnovers played a major role in the Beavers defeat.

“There seems to be a couple minutes right out of the halftime locker room where we don't box out and we don't execute. It has hurt us the last three games,” Green Gerding said. “It seems like a couple things, maybe fatigue, maybe it's a mental thing, but we need to do a better job there.”

SCSU (10-1, 6-1) won the game from the free-throw line, outscoring Minot State 16-7 from the charity stripe, taking 12 more free throws. MISU outshot SCSU 49-39 percent from the floor, hitting two more field goals in the game.

The Huskies were led by a trio of players in double figures, paced by Sam Price's 14 points. Jessica Benson added 13 and Amanda Wagner scored 10, dished out six assists and finished with six steals in the win. Morgan Lof led SCSU with 12 rebounds.

Minot State's Sacarra Molina (Sr., G, Hinsdale, Mont.) led all scorers with 15 points and added five assists and three steals. Francesca DeAngelis (Sr., G, Laguna Niguel, Calfi.) scored 12 off the bench and Carly Boag (Jr., F, Tamworth, Australia) added 11 points and nine rebounds in the loss.

“Our bench gave us a boost today,” Green Gerding said. “Frannie has been consistent over the past seven or eight games.”

The Beavers will look to break a five-game NSIC losing streak with a pair of home games Friday and Saturday. Minot State takes on Upper Iowa Friday at 6 p.m. on Alumni Appreciation Night and the game will be a “White Out” at the MSU Dome. MISU battles Winona State Saturday at 4 p.m.
