Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University's
Carly Boag (Sr., F, Tamworth, Australia) shrugged off a slow start to explode for 25 second-half points to pace the Beavers to an 85-67 win over the University of Jamestown in NCAA Division II women's basketball Wednesday at the MSU Dome.
Boag, who had four points at halftime, went 9 for 13 in the second half from the floor to finish with 29 points to lead all scorers. She also finished with 13 rebounds, three blocks, three steals and three assists.
"Carly is a great player," said MISU head coach
Sheila Green Gerding. "She's hard for anybody to handle one on one and they gave help from a lot of different places. I thought our team did a great job looking for her tonight and getting the ball where it needed to be in the second half."
Boag's outburst helped the Beavers outscore the Jimmies, who played the game as an exhibition, 53-35 in the second half. Minot State (2-0 overall) went from a stagnant 9 of 24 shooting in the first half to a blistering 18 for 27 in the second half.
"We moved the ball great tonight and got a lot of easy shots," Boag said. "My teammates were great in finding me when I was open and we did a good job of using our defense to start our offense."
Neither team could muster much flow in the first half as 25 fouls were whistled including a technical on the Minot State bench and the two teams coughed up the ball 19 times total.
Jamestown countered all of the Beavers' early runs as the pattern of a MISU burst for a small lead and a UJ counterpunch led to a 32-32 tie at halftime. The Jimmies nailed five 3-pointers, ripped down 14 offensive boards and hit 11 free throws in the first half to keep it tied.
But even an increase from 24.2 percent shooting to 40 percent shooting for Jamestown couldn't counter the Beavers' increase. The Beavers shut down the UJ offensive rebounding to the tune of just three in the second half as well. Minot State slowly pulled away in the second, missing just nine shots from the floor and finished with 27 points scored from the line.
Along with Boag,
Alisha Jones (Sr., G, Killeen, Texas) and
Katie Hardy (Jr., F, Fairview, N.D.) each hit for double figures, scoring 19 and 15 points respectively. Jones had 10 and Hardy nine in the first half before Boag heated up.
"Speedy (Jones) is just a whole different kid this year. She's kind of taken ownership of team and really playing with a lot of confidence and a lot of energy and really just trying to lead us," Green Gerding said. "She's fit in to belonging here now and knowing that this is her team, it's her senior year and she wants it to be a great one."
The Jimmies got 18 points and five rebounds from Carly Jenson, hitting 5 of 7 from beyond the arc, and Hannah Steele (13 points) and Jessica Buck (10) both reached double figures in the loss. Jordan Bridges and Megan Pold both pulled down five boards for UJ.
Hardy just missed a double-double with nine rebounds and
Morgan Klose (Jr., G, Fairview, N.D.) finished with five assist and six points for the Beavers.
Christina Boag (Jr., F, Tamworth, Australia) and
Alexandra Haley (R-Fr., G, Libertyville, Ill.) also chipped in with six each.
Minot State finishes a week of nonconference play with a 5 p.m. game against Presentation College Sunday at the MSU Dome.
