Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University didn't shoot overly well, especially early in the game, but the Beavers were relentless on the offensive glass.
Minot State outrebounded Presentation College 16-7 on the offensive end to help the Beavers to an 83-63 nonconference NCAA Division II men's basketball win Sunday at the Minot State Dome.
"It's good we've been crashing the boards hard and working hard in that aspect but we need to finish some of our shots better," said MISU head coach
Matt Murken. "I told our guys, it's a step in the right direction when you can go out and win by 20 and still be frustrated with how we played. We don't take winning for granted but we've only scratched the surface of what we can be this year."
The Beavers (3-0 overall) warmed up as well hitting 56.3 percent in the second half after making just 12 of 36 in the first. Minot State limited Presentation College, who was playing the game as an exhibition, to just 37.1 percent shooting for the game.
While the Beavers struggled a bit as a team in the first half,
Thomas Korf (Jr., F, St. Cloud, Minn.) was spot on right away. Korf hit four 3-pointers, finished a rare four-point play and scored 15 points in the first half as the Beavers led 37-25 at the break.
"My teammates found me and set me up with screens," Korf said. "E.J. (
E.J. Williams, Sr., G, Raleigh, N.C.) found me a few times and I was able to get some shots and make some baskets."
PC (5-1 overall) didn't go away until very late as the game stayed around a 10-point lead for Minot State much of the second half. The Saints got 16 points and three assists from Quincy Davis and 11 points from Chaz Haymond. Vladimir Charlitte paced PC with seven rebounds.
Minot State maintained the double-figures lead throughout the second and pulled away late on a steady dose of post players
Samuel Johnson (Sr., F, Las Vegas, Nev.) and
Chris East (Sr., F, Toronto, Ontario) as well as a steady game from Williams. The trio combined for 44 points, 24 rebounds and three assists.
Johnson led all scorers with 21 points and pulled down nine rebounds, just missing his second straight double-double. East was just a point shy of a double-double with a game-high 10 boards to go along with nine points and Williams scored 15 points and added five rebounds and two assists. Korf finished with 17 points for Minot State.
"Rebounding is really important to us," Johnson said. "Everyone sees us as a smaller team, but we have heart. Me, Lazar (
Lazar Boskovic, Jr., F, Belgrade, Serbia) and Chris always challenge each other to get rebounds so as long as we do that and stay focused we should be fine every game."
The Beavers will have one more tune up before starting conference play as MISU plays host to Valley City State Sunday at 3 p.m.
