Late 3s help Beavers fend off DSU

Minot State pulls away late to finish 4-0 in nonconference

Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University's Carli Elwin (Jr., G, Bonney Lake, Wash.) and Morgan Klose (Jr., G, Fairview, N.D.) each hit big 3-pointers down the stretch to preserve a 74-60 win over Dickinson State in nonconference NCAA Division II women's basketball Sunday at the Minot State Dome.

Elwin's was one of the biggest of the evening as it gave the Beavers a seven point lead with just 3:40 to play, moments after the Blue Hawks clawed their way back for a big deficit to tie the game at 53. Klose, who assisted on the Elwin triple, pushed the Beavers lead back to double figures a little over a minute later.

"When Carly (Carly Boag, Sr., F, Tamworth, Australia) gets off to a good start, good things usually tend to happen for us," said MISU head coach Sheila Green Gerding. "They changed their defense a little bit and we struggled for a while but the whole team did a decent job of making adjustments and passes when we needed it."

The Beavers (4-0 overall) looked to be in cruise control after a 3-pointer by Alexandra Haley (R-Fr., G, Libertyville, Ill.) gave Minot State a 16-point lead with 13:46 to play. But the Blue Hawks (5-1), who played the game as an exhibition, went on an 18-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Ja'Lisa Gatlin at the 8:03 mark.

"Honestly, I was just disappointed with our energy tonight," Green Gerding said. "I thought we came out flat defensively and that's something we need to have night in and night out."

Minot State quickly got the lead back to seven on a pair of baskets by Boag, a layup from Katie Hardy (Jr., F, Fairview, N.D.) and the Elwin 3 helping the Beavers outscore the Blue Hawks 21-7 down the stretch.

"They were focused on trying to stop Carly and that really opened things up for the rest of us," said Hardy who finished with 18 points. "I just had to look for my shot and try to find my teammates when they needed me to get them the ball."

DISU didn't do much offensively in the second half except for the 3-pointers. The Blue Hawks made just four two-point baskets in the half, but hit 5 of 12 3-pointers in the second half. They also limited the Beavers to just 14 second-half field goals, but Minot State hit 5 of 9 from beyond the arc to counter.

TaRicka Linzy led DISU with 23 points and added seven steals and six assists. Mariah Duran scored 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting on 3-pointers and Gatlin scored 11 points and pulled down six rebounds. Dawne Degel paced the Blue Hawks with 10 rebounds and added five points in the loss.

Boag had another outstanding night as she scored a game-high 24 points and added 13 rebounds and three steals while being limited in the second half due to an injury late in the game. Christina Boag (Jr., F, Tamworth, Australia) capped off a solid night with nine points, nine rebounds and four assists. The Beavers had 24 assists on 29 total baskets in the game as Alisha Jones (Sr., G, Killeen, Texas) and Klose dished out five apiece.

Minot State begins its 2013-14 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule with rival University of Mary Saturday with a 4 p.m. tipoff at the Dome.
