Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University held South Dakota Mines to just 25.5 percent shooting and ran away from their former Dakota Athletic Conference rival 75-49 in nonconference NCAA Division II women's basketball Friday at the Minot State Dome.
It was the first game for both teams, now full members of NCAA DII, and the second straight season the Beavers have won their season opener.
"I thought we started doing some good things offensive halfway through the second half," said MISU head coach
Sheila Green Gerding. "We kind of busted out of our funk and we just weren't making good decisions to start the game. A lot of that has to deal with being anxious and the start of a new season, but I thought we got there by doing it on the defensive end, which lead to some offensive success."
Minot State (1-0 overall) trailed by seven early on, but went on a run midway through the first half to take a 34-21 lead at halftime as MISU held Mines to just seven field goals in the half. It was much of the same defensively for Minot State in the second half as the Hardrockers shot just 7 of 25 from the floor.
Offensively, early on it was the
Carly Boag (Sr., F, Tamworth, Australia) show as she powered her way to a game-high 21 points and added 11 rebounds. But the Beavers had great balance as sister
Christina Boag (Jr., F, Tamworth, Australia) chipped in with 13,
Katie Hardy (Jr., F, Fairview, N.D.) and Alexandra Haley (R-Fr., G, Libertyville, Ill.) added eight each and
Alisha Jones (Sr., G, Killeen, Texas) and
Diondra Denton (Fr., G, Great Falls, Mont.) scored six each.
It was the first game back for both
Christina Boag and Hardy after redshirting with injuries in 2012-13 and the duo responded with 21 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and two blocks combined.
"It was really exciting – nothing better than suiting up and getting back out there with my teammates," Hardy said. "We got out to a slow start but coach called a timeout and told us to step up our defense. That's what we did and we were able to come out with a win."
South Dakota Mines (0-1) had two players in double figures scoring as Mackenzie Kenney finished with 12 points and Devyn Asche added 10 in the loss.
The Beavers will take the rest of the weekend off before a single game next week, taking on another former DAC team in the University of Jamestown Wednesday at 6 p.m.
