SCSU 3-pointers end Beavers' streak

Minot State falls for the first time, losing a wild 92-85 game at St. Cloud State

Box Score ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State's 3-point shooting trumped Minot State University's Boags.

The Huskies hit 16 of 28 3-pointers to drop Minot State from the ranks of the unbeaten, winning 92-85 in a wild Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball game Friday at Halenbeck Hall.

The Beavers (7-1 overall, 3-1 NSIC) tried to counter with Christina Boag (Jr., F, Tamworth, Australia) and Carly Boag (Sr., F, Tamworth, Australia), who scored 27 and 21 points respectively, and combined with Alisha Jones (Sr., G, Killeen, Texas) to net 69 of the Beavers' 85 points.

"They (SCSU) came out on fire and you just hope it goes away," said MISU head coach Sheila Green Gerding. "Offensively we were almost as good as them, but they just hit more 3s and that's the difference. As a spectator, it would have been fun to watch that one."

The Huskies (7-1, 3-1) jumped out to a big 15-point lead before Minot State got back into the contest. It was a recurring theme throughout the game as both teams made big runs – with SCSU going out to leads and Minot State roaring back.

Minot State's last lead came at 57-56 at the 11:49 mark of the second half as Christina Boag hit her second 3-pointer of the game. The Huskies answered with a Betsy MacDonald triple 25 seconds later and never relinquished it again. SCSU built a 10-point lead after outscoring MISU 23-12 over the next 6 minutes.

The Beavers, however, did not go away. Minot State cut it to two points on another 3 by Christina Boag with 3:30 to play and again to a one-score game, (84-81) on a triple by Alisha Jones with 1:24 remaining, but couldn't get the equalizer. SCSU was 8 for 8 in the final 1:13 to hold MISU off.

"We could have been better in some ways, coaches always think that, and we weren't very good at times on defense," Green Gerding said. "But, we took the lead late in the second half, and it was a close game before they went to the line. I thought was a well fought game with two good teams."

MacDonald and Sam Price did much of the 3-point damage for SCSU as MacDonald was a perfect 7 for 7 from beyond the arc and Price was stellar at 5 for 8. Price led the way for the Huskies with 25 points and MacDonald added 23. Jessica Benson scored 20 points, pulled down nine rebounds and dished out six assists for a fine all-around game.

Christina Boag netted her first double-double of the season, as she pulled down 11 rebounds to go with her game-high 27 points for the Beavers. She had three assists and two steals in 33 minutes. Carly Boag scored 21 points, pulled down six rebounds and swiped five steals, while Jones had 21 points and seven assists for Minot State.

"Chris had her best night and that was huge," Green Gerding said of Christina Boag. "She was getting going and we saw some things we haven't seen from her this year like driving hit some shots."

Minot State will look to rebound Saturday as the Beavers travel to Minnesota Duluth for a 4 p.m. start.
