Starters power Beavers in overtime

The starting five scored all but six points in Minot State's sixth straight victory

Box Score MINOT, N.D.– Minot State University's starting five combined for 69 of MISU's 75 points and played a key role in overtime as the Beavers outlasted Northern State 75-68 in overtime Friday in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball at the Minot State Dome.

The Beavers (6-0 overall, 2-0 NSIC) outscored NSU (5-1, 1-1) 16-9 in the extra session to remain undefeated on the season and knocked the Wolves from the unbeaten ranks in the process.

"Bottom line is we could have been beaten by that 3, but they (Minot State) got their head back up and went out and took care of business and earned the win tonight," said MISU head coach Sheila Green Gerding.

"That 3" referred to a dagger by NSU's Alison Kusler as time expired to tie the game at 59.

But Minot State answered with a quick jumper by Morgan Klose (Jr., G, Fairview, N.D.) and a 3-pointer by Alisha Jones (Sr., G, Killeen, Texas) followed by free throws by Carly Boag (Sr., F, Tamworth, Australia) to take command 66-59 two minutes into the overtime.

"They (Northern State) did a good job clogging up the lane so we couldn't get it inside, so we were forced to take shots from the outside and had to do it out there before we could get the ball back inside," said Boag, who led all scorers with 21 points. "Flat out, we just had to make some shots after we went cold for a while."

Boag, Klose, Jones and Katie Hardy (Jr., F, Fairview, N.D.) were all starters who finished in double figures scoring and Christina Boag (Jr., F, Tamworth, Australia) added two points to the mix, but ended with 10 rebounds and five assists.

"We did have some people hang their heads after that shot but I mean we can't keep thinking about that," Hardy added. "We just battled hard in overtime and toughed it out tonight."

Minot State led nearly the entire way as the game featured one lead change and just two ties. But Kusler, who scored 11 points and pulled down 14 rebounds, and a four other Wolves who reached double figures, never went away. After shooting just 32 percent in the first half, the Wolves improved to 40 percent in the second and held Minot State to just eight second-half field goals.

Paige Watashek led the Wolves 15 points and hit four 3-pointers, while Rachel Krogman added 11 points and nine rebounds. Megan Muchler and Devon Brecke added 11 apiece.

In the end, however, Minot State's starters were too much to handle. Jones hit for 19 points, hitting 4 of 5 triples and added five assists. Hardy finished with 16 points and six rebounds and Klose knocked down three 3-pointers for 13 points. Carly Boag notched a double-double with 14 rebounds added to 21 points and finished with four assists and three steals in the game.

"Well we have a pretty solid starting five and I think our bench is very capable," said Green Gerding. "You want your older players out there in those end of game situations. I think our bench can still give us value and give us something and those players will definitely see opportunities as the season goes on."

Minot State will look to extend their winning streak in the final game in a seven-game homestand taking on Minnesota State-Moorhead Saturday at 4 p.m.
