Second half lull sinks Beavers

Minot State outscored 46-31 after the break

Box Score MINOT, N.D. – For a good stretch of the game, Minot State University hung with Concordia University, St. Paul.

The Beavers trailed by just five at halftime and matched the Golden Bears much of the way.

But there was a small lull in the second half and that's all it takes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

CU outscored Minot State 46-31 thanks largely in part to a 14-2 run early in the second half to earn an 85-65 win over the Beavers in NSIC women's basketball Friday at the Minot State Dome.

“We had that lull where we didn't take good shots and they took advantage of it,” said MISU head coach Sheila Green Gerding. “You can't do that against good teams. I thought we were a little lethargic in the first half, but it going overall. We were still pretty good for about five minutes in the second half. We played about 25 minutes.”

The Beavers (9-10 overall, 5-10 NSIC) went from 39.3 percent shooting in the first half to just 24.1 in the second, making just seven second-half baskets.

CU (14-5, 12-3), on the other hand, followed up solid 48 percent shooting with a 16-for-32 performance in the second half. The Golden Bears, who have won six straight and 11 of their past 12 games, have surged to the top of the NSIC standings.

“Their depth made a big difference. It is the difference between the top teams and everybody else,” Green Gerding said. “The 1-5 is pretty close, but 6-9 – they've got some people who game them good minutes.”

After the CU lead ballooned to 17, the Beavers had one more run in them, cutting it to 63-53 with 8:03 remaining on a Morgan Klose (So., G, Fairview, N.D.) 3-pointer, but the Golden Bears answered with a 3-pointer by Carissa Wolyniec just 16 seconds later.

The Golden Bears had five players in double figures, paced by Anika Whiting's 21. She also finished with four rebounds and two steals. Wolyniec added 16 points and three assists, Rachel Hansen scored 12 points and added three assists and Jasmine Haynes and Amanda Barton chipped in with 11 each.

Francesca DeAngelis (Sr., G, Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Sacarra Molina (Sr., G, Hinsdale, Mont.) paced the Beavers with 13 points apiece. Lauren Safranski (Sr., G, Burnsville, Minn.) added 11 points, while Klose scored 10. Carly Boag (Jr., F, Tamworth, Australia) just missed a double-double with a game-high 17 rebounds and nine points. Boag helped the Beavers to a 44-35 edge on the boards.

“We had some positive things that we can take away,” Green Gerding said. “They are a big team and we kept them off the boards for the most part. We have to keep getting better. You see what we need to do against good teams and then get better.”

The Beavers will see another good team as Minnesota State comes to the Minot State Dome for the finale of a four-game home stand Saturday at 4 p.m.
