Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Minot State University baseball had two superb pitching efforts on their way to a split double-header with Wayne State College Friday evening.
The Beavers fell in game one 2-0, but we're able to rally in game two and defeat WSC 2-1.
For Minot State (3-1 overall 0-0 NSIC), sophomore
Austin Zorn (P, Bismarck, N.D.) was dominant in his first start of the season. Zorn pitched a complete game (seven innings), giving up just four hits and one earned run. He also struck out four Wildcats in the win.
“Austin is a guy that really pounds the zone,” said MISU head coach
Brock Weppler. “He keeps the ball low and throws strikes; that's been what has worked for him. He is going to make hitters swing at his pitch. When he does miss, he misses out of the zone. He had a solid performance today.”
In the win in game two of the evening, the Beavers offense knocked seven hits total.
Connor Moughtin (Jr., C, Victoria, British Columbia) had two hits and one RBI while
Tyler Stevenson (Jr., OF, Cheyenne, Wyo.) also collected two base hits in the victory.
In game one against Wayne State, the Beavers received a solid start on the mound from
Matthew Davis (So., P, Red Deer, Alberta). Davis pitched six innings, allowing seven hits while striking out three.
“All weekend long I thought we had great pitching,” said Weppler. “Matthew got us start today with a really good performance. We knew coming in that Wayne State had some good pitchers, so we expected it to be low scoring ball games.”
The story of the game was Minot State's inability to get a rally started against the Wildcats. MISU collected seven hits, one in each inning, but could not put anything together to move a runner across home plate.
“We didn't have a lot of quality at bats today,” Weppler said. “We are seeing good pitching but our guys need to go up there and battle a little more. If we can improve our at bats moving forward, we can be a tough team.
“Going into the weekend, we were going in blind,” said Weppler. “In baseball we don't have film exchange or anything like that; you just put on your uniform and go compete hard and that's what we did this weekend. We have a few weeks off now and we are sitting at 3-1. I think our guys can feel good about that and be confident moving forward.”
Minot State will not see any live action until March 9, when they travel south to Tucson, Ariz. for the 2013 Russ Matt Greater Phoenix Invitational.
