Minot State can't stop hot-shooting BSU

Bemidji State makes 12 3-pointers in win over MISU

Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University couldn't get enough stops.

The Beavers gave up 12 3-pointers and 48 percent shooting to Bemidji State. And, it seemed like every time BSU needed a big bucket it got one.

Bemidji State's Shannon Thompson hit six of the triples and scored a team-high 24 points to lead BSU to a 81-70 win over Minot State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball Friday at the Minot State Dome.

“Yeah, we couldn't really stop them in the first half and couldn't do much to disrupt them,” said MISU head coach Sheila Green Gereding “We made a couple runs at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half, but couldn't do enough on defense to get the win.”

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Minot State (11-12 overall, 7-12 NSIC) and gave BSU (10-13, 6-13) the season sweep.

Bemidji State opened with hot shooting in the first half, knocking down 17 of 30 shots in the first, to build a lead. Minot State cut into it to get it to 42-39 at halftime. But it was again key shooting early by BSU that built another double-digit lead.

From there, every time MISU made a run, BSU had an answer.

“With tomorrow being the last game for our seniors tomorrow, there can be a lot of distractions with parent and everybody here,” Green Gerding said. “We need to stay focused on Crookston.”

The loss spoiled another huge night for junior post Carly Boag (Tamworth, Australia). Boag posted her third 30-plus scoring night on the season and her second over her past three games. She scored 31 points and added 16 rebounds – both game highs – and finished with three assists, two steals and a blocked shot.

Thompson was good all night, hitting 6 of 10 3s and all four of her free throws. She added five rebounds to her 24 points. She was joined in double figures by Jessie Althoff (15), Morgan Lee (14) and Allison McKee (13). Althoff finished with seven rebounds to pace BSU.

Along with Boag, MISU got double figures from Sacarra Molina (Sr., G, Hinsdale, Mont.), who scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds, and Lauren Safranski (Sr., G, Burnsville, Minn.), who added 10 points.

Minot State will try to rebound with its final home game of the regular season, playing host to Minnesota Crookston Saturday beginning at 4 p.m.
