Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University's
Carly Boag (Jr., F, Tamworth, Australia) was nearly unstoppable on the weekend.
Boag netted her second-straight 30-plus point game on the weekend and her third in four games and finished with 20 rebounds.
The Beavers needed every bit of Boag's game as it took a driving layup by senior
Sacarra Molina (G, Hinsdale, Mont.) with 40 seconds remaining for MISU to take the lead in the Beavers 67-65 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win over Minnesota Crookston Saturday afternoon at the Minot State Dome.
“Carly's play has been steady all year long,” said MISU head coach
Sheila Green Gerding. “She has had double-doubles in just about every conference game and the credit goes to her. She has a great work ethic in practice and she leaves it all on the floor every night.”
Molina did not have a great offensive game, but hit a key 3-pointer down the stretch and had the driving layup that proved to be the game winner. She finished with nine points on the night and four rebounds, inching closer to 1,000 career points as she sits at 979.
But the night belonged to Boag. She was 11 of 17 from the floor and 11 for 13 from the foul line. She finished with double figure defensive and offensive rebounds, pulling down 10 on each side. Boag also finished with four blocks and four steals in the win.
“We played well as a team tonight. I just ran the floor well and my teammates were able to find me in certain spots,” Boag said. “I went up strong and was able to get some buckets. Last time we played them we got smacked by 30, so we really wanted this one tonight.”
Minot State (8-12 NSIC, 12-12 overall) trailed much of the game as Minnesota Crookston started the game with hot shooting, especially on 3-pointers. While the Golden Eagles (4-16, 7-17) cooled off a bit before the half, they finished the first half with seven triples, 43.8 percent shooting and a 37-32 halftime lead.
But Minot State's defense rose to the occasion in the second half. The Beavers limited UMC to just one 3-pointer in the second half and limited the Golden Eagles to 22.6 percent shooting overall in the second.
“I thought our team was a little bit out there tonight. I think we felt sorry for ourselves because we were tired from the night before. But in this conference you are going to play someone good every night to be ready to go,” Green Gerding said. “As a coaching staff we just have to be supportive and make sure we do our jobs so they are in good positions to succeed.”
Minot State, meanwhile, hit four 3s in the second half and outscored UMC 35-28 in the second. Molina,
Morgan Klose (So., G, Fairview, N.D.),
Sarah Lester (Fr., G, Frenchtown, Mont.) and
Bridger Rice (Fr., F, Savage, Mont.) all hit key 3s.
Ashley Martel and Brittani Wiese paced the Golden Eagles with 13 and 12 points respectively. Martell hit three 3-pointers and Wiese, who finished with nine rebounds, had two. Laurie Tyson pulled down 14 rebounds for UMC to go along with six points and two blocks.
Francesca DeAgelis (Sr., G, Laguna Niguel, Calif.) pitched in with six points and two rebounds for the Beavers. Minot State forced 19 UMC turnovers and added five blocked shots in the win.
Minot State moves back on the road for a final NSIC regular season weekend, playing at Northern State and Minnesota State Moorhead Friday and Saturday.
