MISU guards foil Wolves plan

Minot State's Alisha Jones and Sacarra Molina combine for 31 in win

Box Score ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State made a decision to not let Minot State University forward Carly Boag (Jr., Tamworth, Australia) beat them.

Alisha Jones (Jr., G, Killeen, Texas) and Sacarra Molina (Sr., G, Hinsdale, Mont.) made them pay for that choice.

Jones and Molina combined for 31 points as Minot State pulled away down the stretch for a 60-50 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball win Friday at the Aberdeen Civic Arena.

“It was nice to see us have some other people step up for us,” said MISU head coach Sheila Green Gerding. “At times in the second half we were standing around looking at Carly to make a play. But overall, we did a good job of having some other people make some plays for us.”

Minot State (13-12 overall, 9-12 NSIC) went on a 24-9 run from the under 10 media timeout to both regain the lead and then run away from Northern State (15-11, 11-11). The win avenged an earlier loss for Minot State at the MSU Dome.

The Wolves defensive strategy of collapsing around Boag did keep her from hitting for a double-double and she was scoreless at halftime. But, Boag hit for nine points in the second half and hit the glass all night, finishing with a game-high 18 rebounds.

“You look at Carly's line and she only gets six shots but scores nine points, pulls down 18 rebounds and has four steals,” Green Gerding said.

While Boag was bottled up, Jones and Molina provided offensive punch. Jones scored a season high with the 16 points and hit the Beavers' only 3-pointer on the night. It proved to be one of the biggest shots of the game as she knocked down a 3 off a feed from Molina with the shot clock expiring to give MISU a 56-48 lead with 1:08 to play.

“'Speedy' had a nice game,” said Green Gerding. “She let the game come to her and she took what they gave her.”

Minot State's overall defense kept the Beavers in the game early on when shots weren't falling. Northern State rode four first-half 3-pointers to a six-point lead, but MISU held NSU to just nine field goals in both halves. Minot State limited the Wolves to 27 percent shooting in the second half – including 0 for 7 on 3s – and just 30 percent overall.

Molina was steady all night, finishing with 15 points, four rebounds and three assists – pushing her career points total to 994. She will have at least two games remaining to get to 1,000 for her career.

“Sacarra continued to play well and made some shots,” Green Gerding said.

Northern State was paced by Megan Mutchler's 12 points. She and Alison Kusler each finished with a team-high eight rebounds. Sarah Hintz added nine points and seven rebounds for NSU in the loss.

Francesca DeAngelis (Sr., G, Laguna Niguel, Calif.) came off the bench to score six points and Savana Kingsbury (Fr., F, Omaha, Neb.) and Morgan Klose (So., G, Fairview, N.D.) scored four each. Kingsbury did a solid job defending NSU's post players Kusler and Mutchler as the duo scored 40 in the win at Minot in December, but was limited to just 21 Friday.

“Savana came in and it was nice to have her size in there,” Green Gerding said. “We found her wide open a couple times and she found our guards a couple times on some kick outs. I thought our bench played well overall for us.”

The win clinches sixth place for Minot State in the NSIC North, but a Minnesota Duluth win means the Beavers cannot move up and will carry the No. 6 seed into next week's NSIC tournament.
