Beavers bounce back after tough loss

Minot State knocking in 13 runs on 19 hits during Thursday's win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TUCSON, Ariz. – It was a tale of two games Thursday afternoon for Minot State baseball.

The Beavers couldn't get anything going , offensively or defensively in a 12-2 loss to Bemidji State, but the Beavers responded well. MISU knocked a season-high 19 hits in a 13-6 win over St. Ambrose University Thursday afternoon.
Minot State is now 7-4 overall, and will look for two win Friday as they play Wayland Baptist University and Mount Marty College at Kino Sports Complex.

In the game against BSU, Minot State got down early as they gave up a 3 RBI double to Cole Bjorge. Bjorge then stole third base and scored on a throwing error, making the score 4-0 after two innings.

“We got down early to Bemidji and I thought our guys responded alright,” said MISU head coach Brock Weppler. “We gave up four runs but we didn't let things 'snow ball'. We talk about controlling things we can control and I thought we did that.”

A.J. Begay (Jr., 3B, Salt Lake City, Utah) got the Beavers on the board with a thundering double to left center field, scoring Mitch Olson (Sr., 1B, Deloraine, Manitoba) from first base.

Olson and fellow senior Jordan Gilmour (OF, Gatineau, Quebec) led MISU with two hits each. The Beavers were only able to collected five hits in the game while striking out seven times and committing three errors.

“As the game went on, I thought we went back to how we played the first day; being complacent and waiting things to happen instead of making things happen,” said Weppler. “We had two key situations in that game with the bases loaded and we had unproductive outs in those situations. We just didn't have the timely hitting or quality at bats in that first game.”

Against St. Ambrose, Minot State scored nine runs in the first three innings as they coasted to their seventh win of the season.

In the 2012 season, the Beavers had to wait until April 25 to record their seventh win.

“I told the guys that they had to 'get back on the bull',” Weppler said. “Things didn't go well for us in that first game but we had to approach it as a new game and focus on winning every inning and we did a good job with that.”

Sean Arbaut (Jr., Inf., Tehachapi, Calif.) had two great at bats in those first three innings. In his first at bat, Arbaut tripled with one out to bring two runners around to score. In the third inning, he again came through with an RBI single.

Gilmour and Mike Turcotte (Sr., CF, Victoria, British Columbia) led Minot State with four hits each. Gilmour and Arbaut led the team with three RBI apiece in the win.

On the mound Jarrett Duchscher (Sr., P, Regina, Sask.) pitched seven solid innings, earning the win in his first appearance of the 2013 season. Duchscher gave up nine hits and struck out four St. Ambrose batters. Jamin Heller (Jr., P, Lethbridge, Alberta) also pitched two solid innings out of the bullpen to close the books on the win.

“Jarrett did alright today,” said Weppler. “He labored at times and walked a few guys but he did a nice job overall. The biggest thing that he did today was going seven innings, which is big when you are playing as many games as we are in this short amount of time. Now almost our whole bullpen is rested up for tomorrow and can be used effectively.”

First pitch against Wayland Baptist is slated for 12 p.m. Central Standard Time.
