Bemidji State out hits Minot State

MISU went 5-5 at the Tucson Invitational Games

Box Score TUCSON, Ariz. – Minot State baseball lost their second game in a row Saturday morning at Kino Sports Complex.

Bemidji State's offensive attack was just too much to handle as they beat Minot State 12-5 in non-conference play on the final day in Tucson.

BSU (7-7 overall 0-0 NSIC) had 22 hits in the win, as the MISU (8-6 overall 0-0 NSIC) pitching staff could not execute their game plan after the fourth inning. Starter Jesse Goertzen (Fr., P, Steinbach, Manitoba) kept the Bemidji State scoreless, but then allowed seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Goertzen was given his first loss of the young season.

“The biggest thing was his command,” Minot State head coach Brock Weppler said of Goertzen. “The first few innings Jesse was in command, he kept the ball low in the zone and he was hitting his spots. Bemidji was swinging at his pitches in the start, but in the last few innings he left the ball up in the zone and walked a few guys, the only difference was his command.”

Bemidji State's offense was well balanced, as six different hitters had three hits apiece. Zach Brain led BSU with four RBI including a three-run blast in the eighth inning.

Andrew Roach (So., OF, Gilbert, Ariz.) and Mitch Olson (Sr., 1B, Deloraine, Manitoba) led MISU with two hits and one RBI each. Jordan Gilmour (Sr., OF, Gatineau, Quebec) also had a productive day, plating two runs off one hit.

“Everything just absolutely needs to be better moving forward,” said Weppler. “We just need to do a better job playing for every out and winning every inning.

“I think the biggest thing we need to improve moving forward is consistency,” said Weppler. “We need to come to the ball park prepared to play our game, every game. If we can do that there is no doubt about it, we can be really good. You've seen what this team is capable of doing but we just can't come out flat.”

Minot State went 5-5 during their time at the Tucson Invitational Games.

The Beavers will open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on March 23 against Concordia-St. Paul University. The CSP games will played in Minnetonka, Minn.
