Beavers rally but fall short

MISU collected just six hits in the loss Friday

Box Score TUCSON, Ariz. – It under 50 degrees at the start of Minot State baseball's game Friday morning, and the Beaver bats were just as cold.

MISU scored three runs in the ninth inning, but it was enough to rally the win, as they fell to Dakota Wesleyan University 4-3 at the Kino Sports Complex.

“When talking about good things today, our pitching was really great,” said Minot State head coach Brock Weppler. “Matthew Davis (So., P, Red Deer, Alberta) threw a heck of a game again. He has had two starts and thrown outstanding in both of them. Our pitching and defense have been great through the first five games now.”

Davis pitched a solid six 1/3 innings, striking out seven Tiger batters while giving up just eight hits. Davis only walked two batters during his second outing of the season.

At the plate, Minot State (3-2 overall 0-0 NSIC) seemed hesitant, as they took numerous called third strikes. MISU struck out a total of 10 times during the loss to DWU.

Andrew Roach (So., P/OF, Gilbert, Ariz.) led the Beavers at the plate with two hits in four at bats. Roach drilled two doubles and collected two RBI's on the day. Minot State was only able to collect six hits total.

“We need to worry about what we can control at the plate,” said Weppler. “The weather, umpires- we can't worry about it. We need to have good at-bats and put a complete game together at the plate. In the first five or six innings, we had five looking strikeouts and our goal is zero. Baseball is a game of constant adjustments, and that's the beauty of it. Some umpires have big zones and we as a team need to adjust better to things like that.

“If we can continue to improve, which is what these games are all about, there is no doubt about it-this will be a successful trip,” said Weppler. “We have to make adjustments at the plate and continue or pitching and defense.”

The Beavers will now look to bounce back, as they take on Southwest Minnesota State in non-conference action Saturday afternoon. It will a double-header beginning at 1:30 p.m. Mountain Time.
