Box Score 2 FAYETTE, Iowa. – On a day when the stat sheet was filled, it was two keys plays that don't show up that made the difference.
A go-ahead balk and a great defensive shift allowed Minot State (10-12 overall 2-6 NSIC) to win both games against Upper Iowa University (10-12 overall 2-3 NSIC) 6-2, 5-4 on Saturday afternoon at Robertson Woods Field.
In the eighth inning of game two, in a 4-4 ball game Peacock pitcher Tanner Funke balked in the go-ahead run, scoring
Shayne Court (Sr., OF, Red Deer, Alberta) who walked to lead off the inning.
Now with a 5-4 lead, Minot State looked to close out the game in the ninth, but UIU looked primed to score a run as they had runners on first a second with no outs. Then the play of the game happened.
Upper Iowa was looking to advance both runners with a sacrifice bunt, but a great defensive shift by the Beavers cut off the go-ahead run at third.
The Peacocks bunted down the third baseline to a charging A.J. Begay (Jr. 3B, Salt Lake City, Utah) while simultaneously,
Sean Arbaut (Jr., INF, Tehachapi, Calif.) ran across the diamond to the third base to receive the throw from Begay and get the lead runner.
“I thought that play was the perfect play to run at that time,” said Minot State head coach
Brock Weppler. “We run the wheel play a little different than most and we kept it on for a couple pitches when we were expecting them to bunt; we executed the play well.”
After getting the out at third base,
Jarrett Duchscher (Sr., P, Regina, Saskatchewan) got the next two batters out to complete the Saturday sweep. Duchscher picked up the win in game two, pitching two innings while giving up no runs on just one hit.
At the plate in Game 2, Minot State was led by
Connor Moughtin (Jr., C, Victoria, British Columbia) with three hits and an RBI.
Jordan Gilmour (Sr., OF, Gatineau, Quebec) also had three hits for MISU at the leadoff spot.
Moving back to game one of the day,
Cole Stober (Sr., P, Hays, Alberta) pitched one of his best games of the season going all seven innings for the complete game win. It was the first win of the 2013 season for Stober, who struck out six Peacocks.
“Stober was outstanding. His last two games he has been phenomenal,” said Weppler. “It was huge for him to get that complete game. We are sitting in good in regards to our pitching heading into tomorrow.”
Offensively, it was a steady plow for Minot State as they scored at least one run in the last four innings of the game.
Mitch Olson (Sr., 1B, Deloraine, Manitoba) went three-for-three at the plate and junior
Tyler Stevenson (OF, Cheyenne, Wyo.) went two-for-two with an RBI and two runs scored.
Gilmour had another note-worthy performance going one-for-three but scoring three runs.
“Our offense had some real good approaches at the plate today,” stated Weppler. “We did a good job and beared down and got to their bullpens. Obviously we stranded some runners and we will improve on that. Overall, I liked our approach. We grinded out two wins today and that's our demeanor, we are grinders.”
Minot State and Upper Iowa will face off again Sunday in another Northern Sun doubleheader. The first game begins at 12 p.m. with game two following.
