Box Score 2 Yankton, S.D.- Sunday just wasn't Minot State baseball's day.
Between two games and sixteen innings played, the Beavers could rally just one run and seven hits total as University of Sioux Falls completed the four-game sweep, beating MISU 5-1, 10-0 (7) at Riverside Field.
“We didn't play to the level we are capable of playing at any aspect of the games today,” said Beaver head coach
Brock Weppler. “Hitters needed to do a better job of making adjustments at the plate.”
In game one of the day, USF's Derek Fischer threw a complete game, striking out nine Beavers while giving up just one earned run.
Jesse Goertzen (Fr., P, Steinbach, Manitoba) was pegged with the loss giving up four runs on seven hits over three and a third innings.
At the plate,
Mitch Olson (Sr., 1B, Deloraine, Manitoba) was the only batter with multiple hits, collecting two singles in the loss.
Mike Turcotte (Sr., CF, Victoria, British Columbia) drove in the only run of the day for Minot State with an RBI double in the third.
In game two, it was another dominant pitcher performance by the Cougars. Eric Brothers pitched a complete game one-hitter, striking out seven Minot State batters while walking just two.
Connor Moughtin (Jr., C, Victoria, British Columbia) was the only MISU hitter to get in the hit column with a single in the fifth inning.
Austin Zorn (So., P, Bismarck, N.D.) started game two, lasting just two and one third innings while giving up five runs on eight USF hits.
Shane Seddon (Sr., P, Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Austin Bernston (Fr., P, Minot, N.D.)pitched out of the bullpen, giving up another five runs over four and two-thirds innings.
“Our Pitchers needed to do a better job of filing up the zone,” said Weppler “We need to work ahead in the count and executing our pitches.”
Minot State (10-16 overall 2-10 NSIC) will now gear up for a NSIC road trip to Sioux Falls, S.D. on April 24 as they take on the Augustana College Vikings at Ronken Field. The Beavers played two games at Ronken Field earlier in the season, two losses to Winona State (3/28).
