Box Score 2 WILLISTON, N.D. – Minot State University baseball could not hold down the offense of Bemidji State.
BSU (18-16 overall 10-9 NSIC) scored 23 runs on 39 hits on their way to two Northern Sun victories Sunday afternoon at Williston State College Baseball Park, 12-4 & 11-1.
“They are a good hitting team,” said Minot State head coach
Brock Weppler. “Our pitchers got themselves into trouble by getting behind in the count and we left the ball up in the zone. When you do that against a good team, they are going to make you pay.”
Bemidji State's Chad Hanson led the offensive attack in game one, drilling two hits and three RBI's from the leadoff position.
MISU (10-20 overall 2-14 NSIC) starter
Matthew Davis (So., P, Red Deer, Alberta) had a good first inning but could not escape trouble in the second as he gave up eight earned runs on seven hits. Offensively in game one, Minot State had eight hits by eight different players.
Mitch Olson (Sr., 1B, Deloraine, Manitoba) and
Doug Richter (Sr., Inf., Williston, N.D.) each knocked doubles in the loss.
In game two, BSU continued their hot streak, as they put up three runs in the second inning and six runs in the fifth inning on their way to victory. MISU Starter
Austin Zorn (So., P, Bismarck, N.D.) pitched four and two-thirds innings giving up nine earned runs in the loss.
At the plate, Minot State was led by Olson and
Andrew Roach (So., OF, Gilbert, Ariz.) with two hits apiece.
“It's hard to see the good in games like these,” said Weppler. “But tomorrow is another day and we get a chance to redeem ourselves against the same team.”
Minot State and BSU will complete the four-game series on Monday afternoon at 12 p.m. from Williston, N.D.
