Beavers can't find the big hit

Minot State left seven runners in scoring position Sunday evening

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MINNETONKA, Minn. – Minot State baseball out hit the No. 8 team in NCAA Division II Sunday evening.

But the Beavers (8-10 overall 0-4 NSIC) were pegged with two losses to St. Cloud State University (19-2 overall 8-0 NSIC) 1-0 and 4-2, as they couldn't get the timely hitting needed to take a lead at Veterans Field.

“I feel like we outplayed them in both games today,” said Minot State head coach Brock Weppler. We outhit them in both games but just didn't get that big hit we needed.”

In game one, it was a pitcher's duel as Cole Stober (Sr., P, Hays Alberta) threw five solid innings giving up just one earned run on five hits. Stober also struck out five Huskies.

Offensively for MISU, six different players picked up hits including Andrew Roach (So., OF/P, Gilbert, Ariz.) who hit two singles in the loss. As a team the Beavers left eight runners on base, seven of them were stranded in scoring position.

In game two, Minot State received another solid pitching performance from Matthew Davis (So., P, Red Deer, Alberta). Davis tossed six innings allowing four hits, two runs (one earned run) while striking out three.

Alex Fornshell (Jr., SS, Minot, N.D.) lead the Beavers at the plate going three-for-three with three singles. Jordan Gilmour (Sr., OF, Gatineau, Quebec) also had a solid game with two hits, one run scored and one RBI.

“We made some big strides today,” said Weppler. “The team flat out got after it and competed. (Cole) Stober and (Matthew) Davis were both great on the mound for us today and we need to continue to improve each game.”

The Beavers and Huskies will have two more NSIC games tomorrow morning in Minnetonka, Minn. with the first pitched slated for an early 9 a.m.
