The Beavers (12-22 overall 4-16 NSIC) got back in the win column Wednesday afternoon, 12-4 & 14-7 over the Golden Eagles (1-38 overall 1-25 NSIC).
“Our guys were out there playing loose,” said MISU head coach
Brock Weppler. “We were having fun out there. The pitchers did a good job filling the zone and we had some good approaches at the plate.”
In game one, Minot State scored five runs in the first two innings and used a solid start from
Jarrett Duchscher (Sr., P, Regina, Saskatchewan) to pick up the win. Duchscher had a quality start as he went six innings giving up just three earned runs while striking out four UMC batters.
The bottom third of the batting order carried the offensive load, as seven-hitter A.J. Begay (Jr., 3B, Salt Lake City, Utah) knocked in three runs on two hits, eight-hitter
Doug Richter (Sr., Inf., Williston, N.D.) knocked in two runs on two hits and nine-hitter
Tyler Stevenson (Jr., OF, Cheyenne, Wyo.) plated three runs on just one hit.
In the latter game, the Beavers had to rally from a 5-1 defecit to pick up the series sweep. Starter
Jamin Heller (Jr., P, Lethbridge, Alberta) gave up 10 hits and four earned runs in four and two-thirds innings pitched. But a six-run sixth inning and a solid relief appearance by
Trey Jacobson (So., P/OF, Alexander, N.D.) carried Minot State to victory.
In the sixth inning, MISU used four extra base hits off the Golden Eagles and the Beavers batted around the order. This time, the top of the lineup carried MISU.
Leadoff hitter
Jordan Gilmour (Sr., OF, Gatineau, Quebec) had four hits, three RBI and three runs scored, two-hitter
Alex Fornshell (Jr., SS, Minot, N.D.) knocked two hits and two RBI, three-hitter
Mike Turcotte (Sr., CF, Victoria, British Columbia) had three hits and three RBI and cleanup hitter
Mitch Olson (Sr., 1B, Deloraine, Manitoba) knocked in three runs on two hits.
With the 26 combined runs on the day, they eclipsed the amount of runs they scored during their entire 10 game NSIC losing streak.
“You could definitely tell that the guys felt relieved to get those wins,” said Weppler. “They were having fun and they played well today, now we just need to finish the season strong.”
The Beavers will host NSIC rival University of Mary to close the season on May 4 & 5. The games will be the first home games for Minot State this season, and the team is looking forward to it.
“We've had these games penciled on the schedule for a while,” said Weppler, a U Mary graduate. “It will be great to have some home games and play for our fans. We will definitely be going for four wins on the weekend.”
