Beavers fall in Iowa

Minot State can't match Upper Iowa's hot shooting

Box Score FAYETTE, Iowa – Minot State University men's basketball didn't have an answer for Upper Iowa's offensive game.

The Peacocks shot 57.9 percent from the floor to run away from Minot State winning 88-71 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball Friday at Dorman Gymnasium.

"To (Upper Iowa's) credit, they to make it, but our inability to stop them off the bounce and to keep them from driving was the story of the game," said MISU head coach Matt Murken. "They had a lot of wide open jumpers by some pretty good shooters. You're not going to win giving up 58 percent from the floor."

The Beavers (6-7 overall, 2-7 NSIC) fell behind early, battled back a number of times, but never got consistent stops in the loss. While the Peacocks (6-9, 4-5) shot the ball very well, MISU could only hit 38.9 percent from the field.

"We have a lot of basketball to go, but we have to get things better in a hurry," Murken said. "We played well in places but have to shoot better. It's tough when you work hard to get some things but can't knock down the shot."

After a quick 8-1 run by Upper Iowa, Minot State battled back to tie the game at 12 on a 3-pointer by Thomas Korf (Jr., F, St. Cloud, Minn.). But UIU finished the first half on a 32-23 run. A quick burst in the second half for the Peacocks pushed the lead to double figures where it remained in the second half.

Upper Iowa got a solid game from Josh Weeber, who finished with 21 points on 8 of 12 shooting, scoring from both the inside and outside as he hit 2 of 5 3-pointers. Jimmy Roth chipped in with 16 and Grant Lang added 13 in the win.

"He had a nice game, he finished around the basket. We allowed him to get into a roll and played with a lot of confidence," Murken said referring to Weeber. "We have to get the better of that matchup."

Minot State's only player in double figures was Dominique McDonald (So., G, Raleigh, N.C.) who netted a season-high 17 points, going 9 for 9 from the foul line. Samuel Johnson (Sr., F, Las Vegas, Nev.), Chris East (Sr., F, Toronto, Ontario) and E.J. Williams (Sr., G, Raleigh, N.C.) each scored nine points. East pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds as the Beavers held a 34-28 advantage on the board.

Minot State will look to pull off an upset to end a three-game losing streak as the Beavers travel to No. 21 Winona State Saturday at 6 p.m.
