Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minot State University had a last second shot blocked as Concordia St. Paul held off the Beavers 66-65 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball Friday at the Gangelhoff Center.
The Beavers (7-12, 3-12) forced a missed shot by the Golden Bears with 13 seconds to play with CSP nursing a 66-65 lead and
Chris East (Sr., F, Toronto, Ontario) found
Nathan Mertens (Fr., G, Devils Lake, N.D.) on the left wing. Mertens drove the length of the court but had his layup attempt was blocked by the Golden Bears' Shea Mandli just before time expired.
It was another tough, late-game loss for the Beavers as Minot State has dropped four games this season by four points or fewer and two of those contests ended in overtime.
The teams were never separated by more than six points and each team had its largest lead (CSP 6, 18:31 first half; MISU 5, 4:24 first half) in the first half. Minot State took its last lead with 8:33 to play in the game on a jumper by
Dominique McDonald (So., G, Raleigh, N.C.). McDonald tied the game at 64 with a layup five minutes later, but the Beavers couldn't grab a lead.
The Golden Bears (6-13, 3-12) won despite making just one field goal in the final three minutes, a layup by Cordell Smith with 2:08 to play that turned out to be the game winner. While CSP couldn't get offense going down the stretch, the Beavers struggled from the floor as well, getting just one East free throw in that same stretch.
Neither team shot the ball overly well from the floor as MISU held a 40 percent-36.4 percent advantage, but the Golden Bears put up nine more shots as they outrebounded the Beavers 20-14 on the offensive glass.
Travon Mitchell, Terez VanPelt and Cordell Smith all reached down figures for Concordia St. Paul, scoring 16, 15, and 14 points respectively. Smith earned a double-double with 11 boards for the Golden Bears.
Minot State's
Samuel Johnson (Sr., F, Las Vegas, Nev.) also ended with a double-double as he scored 20 points and added 10 rebounds. McDonald netted 17 points, all in the second half, and East finished with 12 points and eight rebounds for the Beavers.
Minot State continues a road swing with a game at nationally ranked Minnesota State Saturday starting at 6 p.m.
