Energy key in Beavers win

Minot State earns first win over ranked opponent in Division II

Box Score MINOT, N.D. – What a difference a night – and a little energy – makes.

Minot State University shrugged off its worst defeat of the season and earned its biggest as a member of NCAA Division II, knocking off No. 13 ranked Augustana College 88-71 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball Saturday at the Minot State Dome.

It was the first win for the Beavers (9-3 overall, 5-3 NSIC) over a ranked opponent since joining NCAA DII three years ago and put Minot State in sole possession of second place in the NSIC North.

"That was our team tonight," said MISU head coach Sheila Green Gerding. "We came out with energy from the get go. It's all about a mindset and our mind was made up tonight that we were going to have a tale of two teams because that clearly wasn't the case last night. I am just really happy and proud of the girls for being able to rebound from a loss like that and play like we did tonight."

The Beavers raced out to a 44-31 halftime lead with a much-improved overall effort as Carly Boag (Sr., F, Tamworth, Australia) and Morgan Klose (Jr., G, Fairview, N.D.) combined for 26 points in the first. The duo equaled those totals in the second half as well as Boag was a dominate force hitting for 32 points and pulling down 14 rebounds to go with three assists and two steals. Klose, who reached 20 points or more in two of her last three games, knocked down three 3-pointers and all five free throws for a 20-point, four-assist night.

"Obviously yesterday wasn't my best performance, but I couldn't let that affect me today and I just posted up because their tallest player was about 6-feet," Boag said. "When I was able to get the ball in the paint I could just go to work."

Augustana College (8-4, 4-4) tried to use the 3-pointer to keep with the Beavers, but hit just 8 of 38 attempts from beyond the arc. Still, the Vikings closed the Beavers 13-point halftime lead to 11 a couple of times in the second half – the final time on a layup by Emily Schulte with 9:54 to play.

But Boag knocked down a layup and Klose dripped a 3-pointer on a feed from Alisha Jones (Sr., G, Killeen, Texas) on back-to-back possessions to keep Augie at bay.

"We totally came out with new energy," said Jones, who finished with 11 points and six assists. "That's the main problem when we lose games; it's our energy. So we had to pump ourselves up in the locker room before we came out to some Beyonce and we came out and played well."

"We got the ball to the right place and we got the ball inside," added Green Gerding. "They (Vikings) are very, very guard oriented while we are post oriented and that's a tough matchup for them. Our zone defense worked out well because they missed some shots so that was the equalizer for us and we just did a nice job executing our game plan."

The Vikings finished with three in double figures as Rhianna Gullickson scored 24 points, Riley Nordgaard added 20 points and seven rebounds, and Schulte finished with 11 points and seven assists in the loss.

Boag, Klose and Jones led all five Beavers' starters in double figures as Christina Boag (Jr., F, Tamworth, Australia) and Katie Hardy (Jr., F, Fairview, N.D.) scored 11 and 10 points respectively. Christina Boag and Hardy had seven rebounds each as Minot State held a 48-46 advantage on the boards.

Minot State heads out on the road for its longest conference trip of the year, playing at Upper Iowa Friday and Winona State Saturday.
