Beavers fend off Dickinson State

Minot State counterpunches DSU to avoid an upset

BOX SCORE

DICKINSON, N.D. – Minot State University built a double-figure lead early in the first half and took Dickinson State's best punch in the second half to take a 79-63 win in exhibition NCAA Division II men's basketball Wednesday at Scott Gymnasium.

The Beavers led by 19 before a quick DSU run cut it to just 10 early in the second half. But MSU counterpunched its way back to a comfortable lead as the Beavers pushed the lead to 56-35 and the outcome was never in doubt after.

"Both teams played well in stretches," said MSU head coach Matt Murken. "We had a lot of different combinations and had a lot of guys make contributions. There are a whole lot of things that we have to do better and we need to learn from successes and failures and keep improving."

Dickinson State made its run via the 3-pointer as Jacob Gondrezick hit a pair. But the Blue Hawks made just 8 of 30 from beyond the arc.

MSU was steady on its end of the course as the Beavers hit eight 3s on just 17 attempts and outscored the Blue Hawks 23-7 at the free-throw line despite going just 23-for-38 from the line.

"We were sick of practicing against each other and now at least we were running into someone else," Murken said. "Our guys played hard and have worked hard. If we continue to do that and improve it will be fun."

Gondrezick led the Blue Hawks with 12 points including three 3-pointers, while Curtis Redd added 11 and Connor Donaldson 10 in the loss.

Thomas Korf (Sr., F, St. Cloud, Minn.) paced the Beavers with 19 points, hitting four 3-pointers in the win. Dominique McDonald (Jr., G, Raleigh, N.C.) added 11 points and Winston Williams (Jr., F, Plainfield, Ill.) finished with a double-double scoring 10 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Minot State outrebounded Dickinson State 44-33 as Everett Robinson (Sr., G, Grand Junction, Colo.) finished with eight rebounds and nine points for the Beavers.

The Beavers will continue exhibition play and be back on the road next week as they travel to NCAA Division I North Dakota State, a NCAA National Tournament qualifier last season, Wednesday night in Fargo.
