Box Score BAYAMON, Puerto Rico – Minot State University men's basketball built a double-digit lead, lost it in the final five minutes, but recovered to outscore the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras 10-5 in overtime to win 67-62 in nonconference NCAA Division II men's basketball Tuesday at the UPR-Bayamon Complejo Deportivo.
"All good teams have to learn how to win," said MSU head coach
Matt Murken. "We didn't play a complete game, but when we faced adversity late, we responded. We have a lot of learning and improving to do to get to where we want to be."
The Beavers (2-1 overall) shot 50 percent in the first half to run out to a 37-26. The lead grew to as many at 14 in the second half and as late as seven minutes to go.
But the Gallitos didn't go away, tying the game at 57 at the end of regulation. The Beavers couldn't put UPR-RP away, struggling from the free throw line throughout the game shooting just 46.2 percent.
Shooting from the free-throw line and on 3-pointers hindered the Beavers much of the game as the Beavers hit just 3 of 16 on 3s to go with their free throw shooting. But MSU knocked down 1 of 2 3s – a huge triple by
Thomas Korf (Sr., G, St. Cloud, Minn.) to give Minot State a five-point lead after a rebound put back by
Tyler Rudolph (Fr., F, Bismarck, N.D.) started the overtime scoring – and went 3 for 5 from the charity stripe in the extra session.
While MSU struggled shooting in those two spots, it was decently efficient from the floor overall, shooting 44.8 from the field. Minot State also held the Gallitos to just 35.6 percent shooting overall, including just 10 for 35 in the second half and overtime.
Minot State also made up for inconsistent shooting with a huge rebounding advantage, outrebounding the Gallitos 53-28 in the game.
Lamont Prosser (Sr., F, Fort Wayne, Ind.) netted his first double-double of the season with a game-high 13 rebounds and 12 point. Prosser, Rudolph and
Winston Williams (Jr., F, Plainfield, Ill.) combined to have as many rebounds (28) as Rio Piedras. Williams finished with eight boards and six points, while Rudolph added seven rebounds and six points in the win.
Omar de Jesus and Brian Martinez both hit for 13 points to pace UPR-Rio Piedras in the loss. Esteban Cordero added seven points, five rebounds and two assists for the Gallitos.
Everett Robinson (Sr., G, Grand Junction, Colo.) joined Prosser with 12 points to lead the Beavers. Robinson also had five rebounds, two assists and two steals for MSU. Korf knocked tow two 3-pointers and scored 10 points, while
Dominique McDonald (Jr., G, Raleigh, N.C.) and
Nathan Mertens (So., G, Devils Lake, N.D.) added seven apiece. McDonald dished out five assists for MSU in the win.
The Beavers will open their home schedule with an afternoon tipoff against Mayville State Sunday starting at 3 p.m.
